20v thermostat coolant bleeder valve

Postby tommy_t » Fri Mar 11, 2016 11:21 am

I am unable to locate the thermostat coolant bleeder valve on a 20v ST. Does anyone have a picture of it by any chance?

Thanks,

Can't say I have ever heard of that item :?

Nevertheless, it sounds as if it should be located in the water routing block attached
at the rear of the head. That seems to be where the thermostat and related items live.

Is it possible that the 20v does not have a thermostat bleeder valve?

The 4age that is found in MR2s have this valve, but I can't find anything confirming that the 20v has this...

Maybe that the 4age in the MR2 has this valve due to the longer distance between the engine and radiator but it was not needed in the FWD 4ages?

Ahhhh.... with you now :) I see that the MR2 does have a valve located on
the thermostat housing for bleeding air when re-filling the cooling system.
Since I only ever worked on an AE86, and they don't have any such valves,
I had never come across one before.

If the 20V is installed in a FR car such as an AE86, there won't be any bleeder
valves. Usual procedure for filling the cooling system is fill thru the radiator
cap and "burp" the system by squeezing on the radiator hoses. Turn the
heater onto maximum hot, then let the engine idle with the cap off. When
the thermostat opens you will see water start to circulate inside the radiator.
Gently raise the engine revs by around 1000-2000 rpm a few times until
bubbles no longer appear at the radiator neck.

Top up the radiator (if you blew water out by revving the engine too high).
replace the cap and done.

Thanks Jondee. That is the procedure that I have always used since I could not find the valve. I assumed that this engine did not have it, but I wanted to make sure since I am about to do another flush.

Thanks!
