Can't find the service connector to set ignition timing
Can't find the service connector to set ignition timing
I was going to try and set my ignition timing earlier and could not find to service plug. I bought the car with the 4age swap already done (sr5 to gts) and can't get ahold of the guy I bought it from. I checked throughout the entire engine bay and couldn't find anything that looks like the service connector. Is there a trick to setting the timing without jumping the terminals at the connector?
Re: Can't find the service connector to set ignition timing
If you can't find/don't have a diagnostic plug to jump, do this...
1. Get the engine up to normal operating temp.
2. Make sure it is idling at around 850-900 rpm.
3. Hook up your timing light to #1 spark plug lead.
4. Check to see where the notch on the crankshaft pulley is compared
to the scale on the front of the lower timing belt cover. A dab of whiteout
on the notch makes it easier to spot.
5. Set the notch to 16-17 deg BTDC (adjust the distributor if necessary).
6. Put your light away, close the hood, grab a beer... you're done

Re: Can't find the service connector to set ignition timing
Thanks, I will have to try that.

Also you can ground the terminal directly on the Ecu by back probing it, this will achieve the same effect as connecting the te and e1 terminals.
