3. gen Honda Prelude piston rings do fit smallport pistons

Once I bought my smallport pistons I ran into problems finding rings for them.

After some research and looking around I managed to find the information that third generation Honda Prelude rings fit on the smallport pistons.

The Honda is a 2.0 liter and the 4AGE a 1.6 liter, so how do they fit? The answer is the engine bore. Both engines have the same bore (81.00mm), but the Honda has a longer stroke.

The other thing is of course the dimensions of the piston rings themselves. Both pistons use the same pistons ring dimensions, as following:

1st compression ring - 1.2mm

2nd compression ring - 1.5mm

Oil rings and scrapper - 2.8mm

I ordered a set of Honda Prelude piston rings made by a NPR (a good OEM supplier brand) and measured them to check if this was true. It indeed was and I decided to make a little video out of it.

Hope this helps people as good quality piston rings for the smallport pistons tend to be pretty hard to find!

Here's the video where I measure the rings and pistons to show they indeed fit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hW5A_K-Kj2o
Here's my blog post: http://www.driving4answers.com/honda-pr ... t-pistons/ (pretty much the same as this post)

Hastings also make a ring set to suit the smallport, suits most 4A-GE engines with the standard ring configuration (1.2mm, 1.5mm, 2.8mm). The Hastings part number is 2C4684.

The bigport is actually 1.5, 1.5, 2.8 I think. Dont know about the 20v engine pistons.
Are the hastings rings chrome?

Hmmm. I havent even thought about the widths....

Sooooo....can i fit the Honda rings??? Should I? I saw on a few forums that guys are running these rings with the smallport pistons. They claim to be fine.
Your thoughts? What did you end up putting in?

I still haven't done my build, but I chose those rings because others said they fit. From measuring them with calipers vs stock ones, they do seem close enough. I'm going to trust them enough to use them in my build, whenever that happens.

I feel better knowing youre putting them in as well :)
We''ll see how they perform. Hopefully well. I will be putting everything together in May. Will try to dig up this thread once I do it and update it.

aBout two years ago I've ordered a set of 4AGZE smallport's 81mm pistons for an acquaintance's 1.8L Mitsubishi engine. (4G93 code??). It fit the bore but the small ends of the conn rods had to be overbored 1mm for the pins to fit and the pistons' skirts had to be ground or notched juuuuust where the crank's wings would touch.
