MAP Conversion Problem. No Start.

Postby AE Harold. » Thu Dec 18, 2014 4:31 pm

Hey everyone. I have a bluetop 4age 16v stock and converted my engine harness to a map harness. I also changed the ecu, distributor, and ignitor as well.
I set the correct timing on the engine but it doesn't start. At first it seemed as if it would start but then shut off quickly. Now it just turns over.
Found out that i don't have spark going to my spark plugs anymore (not sure if I did at first). I have power going to my positive and negative side of my coil but no power going out of the coil. I've changed the coil to a known good coil but still no power coming out.
Can i have a bad ignitor?
Or could there be a bad ground within the harness?
Could the pinouts on the map ecu be different from the usdm pinouts? Ive heard that I have to change out my injectors?????
Does anyone have a troubleshooting chart or diagram?
Also I would like to know how to troubleshoot the map sensor. Just to see if that may also be an issue.

If anyone has any info or ideas what my problem can be let me know!

I had the same problem recently (no spark) and was due to a bad igniter.

Could be... there are two types of injectors... high Ohm (12-14 Ohms)
and low Ohm (2-4 Ohm). In general, low Ohm injectors work with the
resistor pack, and high Ohm injectors don't need the resistor pack. You
need to check what you have the correct combination for your ECU.

Using low Ohm injectors without the resistor pack can cause the injectors
to draw more current than the transistors in the ECU can handle. This leads
to overheating and possible burnout of the transistors.

Using high Ohm injectors with the resistor pack will mean that the injector
operation will be erratic due to low current.

AFAIK USDM AFM ECU's (gotta love acronyms !!) work with low Ohm and
the resistor pack. But apparently there are some mongrel combinations
that were used, so I can't say what your MAP ECU might work with :?

Ae you currently a map setup or the regular usdm maf setup?
My car was running good with the old maf setup but now that I've changed the harness and everything. it doesn't want to start. It just turns over.
Might just throw in the white flag

The ecu i have is a ae86 16v map ecu (jdm ecu.) I was told it was a pnp ecu.
Please tell me if I'm wrong. Been reading on other old forums and many say i need to move pinouts and wires around.
NEED HELP!!! Don't want to give up!

I'm using a usdm maf set up.

Igniter grounds thru its outer casing, so you need to make sure
that it is bolted down and getting a good ground to the chassis.
Get that multimeter in action ;)

You have to repin a few wires on the under dash harness
To match the JDM MAP harness
