4age cam gears weight comparison

Postby Takumi-Fujiwara » Fri Nov 22, 2013 5:08 pm

I think I've read about this online some where before but I couldn't find the original thread...

How does the stock 4age bluetop/redtop cam gears weight vs obx, nst, technotoytuning, hks, tomei, toda adjustable cam gears?

It would be interesting to know the weight comparisons to see which one puts less strain on the engine.

Some merchants have given me these weights off their ebay listings for cam gears.

Toda adjustable gear weight: 300grams per gear
Tomei adjustable gear weight: 700grams per gear

You ask an interesting question but you phrase it in a more interesting manner.
I say that because you say strain and that can refer to many things. A lighter cam gear would rob less HP from the engine but a heavier cam gear would retain it's inertia better and dampen shocks such as the valve train and combustion events. I would imagine heavier cam gears would strain the timing belt and attached components less but would rob more power.
That said, how much power it takes to spin something is related to the mass, center of mass and acceleration. The cam gears aren't very big around and the center of mass is quite small. On top of that they are spinning half as fast as the crank. Loosing 1 lb on the center of mass of the cam pulleys would probably be about the same as loosing .01 lb on the center of mass on the flywheel.

No way I believe the Tomei's weigh more than twice as much.
If you are looking for a set of gears and if weight is that important to you I can talk to my contacts at the listed companies and get weights.
Of course then I would hope you would give me the first chance to sell you the parts instead of just buying them somewhere else after I put in all the legwork like usually happens on these boards. :o

Like I said though I really don't think it's something to be concerned with unless you are building a $20k race engine. Otherwise just get a lighter flywheel for much larger gains. Or put the money into mods that will actually make you more power.
Throw a turbo on there and double your HP. You won't care how much your cam gears weigh.

Yes of course i've read that it actually doesn't make much difference on the engine drag, so of course i'd save my money for a lighter flywheel for more added benefits. This topic would be very useful to have on here for people in the future interested in the weight numbers of aftermarket cam gears vs stock. This topic to do with me specifically has more to do with the lightest and most reliable and best adjustable aftermarket pulley working with a full lighter pulley set for a 16v 4age setup all around with (water pump pulley, crank pulley, alternator pulley in mind) for the overall outcome of less additional engine drag. Another thing would be to eliminate the stock waterpump fan and going electric fan (until a company like technotoytuning, nst or obx or whatever comes out with a waterpump fan aluminum light casing alternative to an electric fan) but I digress...

let's see those numbers folks.

there used to be a pic with the 3 different types of cam gears floating around the net but i cant seem to find it. it showed the large port the small port and the 20v exhaust cam and there weights. the large port was the heaviest the small port was the b next and the 20v 3 spoke exhaust was the lightest but i dont remember what each one weighted. ill look but that is like finding a needle in a hay stack it might have been on bill sherwoods sight but i could be wrong
