starting issue
hey there , i have an ae86 with 4age red top . the car wont start when its cold unless you give it some gas, then if you remove your foot from the gas pedal the car will turn off again. but when its warmed it will run good . P.S. there is no water lines going threw the throttle bodies. please any suggestions ?
Re: starting issue
You need to look underneath the throttle body and see if the thermostatic idle-up valve
is still there (part inside the red circle). Often, if the valve does not work properly, instead
of fixing the valve, it will be removed, and a blank plate fixed in its place. Then you will get
the cold starting problems you are having.

Re: starting issue
i just checked and found that this part is there but under the two idle lines (the part in black) is closed with a screw , is it important ?
Re: starting issue
The two tubes pointing down are for the water hoses.
The two tubes pointing out without caps are for the P/S.
The one with the cap is for the A/C idle-up (I think ?).
The water tubes don´t need to be capped, but all other tubes must be capped.
Use a piece of hose (or whateva) to see if you can easily blow in one of the water
tubes, and have air come out the other. If the water circuit is blocked, then the
idle-up valve does not work, and usually this causes a permanently high idle. Then,
often times the air circuit of the idle-up valve is blocked off by the car owner to
bring the idle speed down.
This can involve a physical blocking with putty or silicone forced into the opening
at 5 o´clock inside the throttle body and just in front of the butterfly. Or a blank
gasket used to replace the gasket with openings that seals between the valve and
the throttle body. Or filling the air circuit inside the valve with epoxy or silicone.
If you want to restore the normal cold start operation of the idle-up valve, you will
need to remove it and take a look inside (easier to take the whole throttle body off).
New gaskets are available from Toyota, and also come with top end overhaul
gasket sets.
