ok so is it the rear drive vs transverse mounting?
Re: Water pump different on 88 Mr2
Exactly. RWD 4age water pumps are beefier so they can handle the clutch fan.

ok but do they mount the same I mean they look the same to me but is there something possibly the motor mount that is part of the installation, my builder is telling me all the water pumps we've tried wont fit correctly I'm using 88 MR2 motor and putting it in 87 AE86 GTS
Re: Water pump different on 88 Mr2
I used the water pump from the 87 mr2 I got my engine from in my ae86, but there was a hook up in the wiring for a electric fan, so I'm now running a modified electric fan from a 2000 corolla

2 different plates that mount the 2 different WPs on the block.
Re: Water pump different on 88 Mr2
i think you're builder is a little slow. all the front pumps except maybe 4ac will bolt up...
are you mounting it in an mr2? use the original rear half from the mr2 and use an MR2 FWD pump.
are you mounting it on an ae86? use the original rear half from the ae86 and use a RWD pump with the RWD pulley if you intend to use a clutch fan
are you mounting it on an ae86 with an electric fan? use either a FWD or RWD pump as long as you use the proper pulley that matches it for alignment.
note: sometimes on a FWD pump the fins are bigger and wont clear the rear ae86 pump half, ive notice this on OEM toyota pumps however some jobbers like beck arnley use smaller cast iron fins which arent an issue

Re: Water pump different on 88 Mr2
it was my fault I didn't realize they needed the assembly that the water pump mounts to, its probaly different with the Mr 2 and the different motor mounts, so I took off the 4ag in my AE 86, so they could complete assembl;y of the long black with timing belt etc
