aw11 MS3 DD TPS issue

Re-visiting my tps issue. been on MS3 since January with very few issues.

tps acts funky and the only thing i can track it to are the connections with the sensor itself. i re-soldered the pigtail to be sure and have tried multiple tps's. essentially it dips before raising on accel and will jump to 50-60 very quickly... wot its fairly consisitent
sometimes my idle position fluctuates tho...
I will triple check for noise in the circuit before hacking into my harness a 3rd time.

bump

can anyone sweep a tps and confirm a smooth sweep and consistent closed voltage

Yes... the TPS should have a smooth sweep (not necessarily linear) and
the full open and full closed values should be steady. If the sweep has gaps,
dead spots or sudden steps, the track is damaged and you need a new TPS.

problem is there aren't a lot of options for a new 4AGE tps.

i ordered a new denso on ebay for nearly 100$ and it may have been a bit better but still not working correctly...
then i ordered an ECHLIN unit through my shop and it was like 150$, when it arrived it wasn't really any better than my denso, certainly not enough to justify keeping it so i sent it back...

i've tried like 3 that i've pulled, one was on my working 4age when it was stock with no issues... and 2 new.

my turbo manifold has a leak so its down until this weekend anyway but this TSP issue has been ongoing now since i started on MS3. everything else pretty much works perfectly making this all the more frustrating.
thanks

When I first wired up my TPS, my engine didn't even run. It took me
quite a while to figure out I had made a complete hash of the wiring.
I think I had three of the four wires hooked up wrong. Once I sorted
that out it ran fine.

With a laptop hooked up, can you sweep the TPS and see the irregularities
in your readings ? Does it do exactly the same thing when you unplug the
TPS and check the sweep with a meter directly onto the pins ?

i really appreciate any and all suggestions :)

short answer yes

i made this a while ago
tps removed from car, by itself showing resistance changing after i let it snap back to full closed position which would result in my idle TPS% climbing above 0

http://youtu.be/tGGn9a4Bols

2nd vid is with tps plugged into my harness key-on showing a somewhat spikey sweep (every pause i make shows a dip in voltage as i resume the sweep) which would result in a decel event in the beginning of every accel event as well as a non-linear accel due to extreme off-idle sensitivity...

EAE using tps is impossible for me...

How do you have it wired?

Definitely does not look good. Have you identified the pins and confirmed
the test values shown on this page from the factory manual ?

the 2nd video shows the tps climbing in voltage from ~.3v to ~4.9v so i don't see how it could be wired incorrectly...

and again with or without the wiring the tps starts to climb in volts (drop resistance) slowly when u snap it closed. PLUGGED IN OR ON ITS OWN... can anyone check another tps to verify this?

going from memory E2 is GND, VTA is TPS and VCC is 5v VREF

Here are the resistance values (in kOhms) that I pulled off a spare
throttle body with my $10 analogue multimeter...

E2 > IDL Zero to infinity (sudden change)
E2 > VTA 0.75 to 3.8 sweep
E2 > VCC 4.2 constant
IDL > VTA 0.75 to infinity (sudden change)
IDL > VCC 4.2 to infinity (sudden change)
VTA > VCC 1.0 to 3.9 sweep

All values represent the start and end readings from closed to full open
throttle. Sudden change means that the IDL switch changed state a small
fraction after the throttle moved from full closed. Note that when the TPS
is off the throttlebody, the wiper rotates past the "closed" postion that it
stops at when it is attached to the throttlebody. I don't know if this has
any effect on the sweep values ?

Watching the needle movement on the meter, I could see some tiny
amount of overshoot and lag if I stopped and started part way thru a
sweep. It could be needle inertia or some small difference in dynamic
and static resistance on the tracks. I would not call it a problem, as TPS
value is not the major load input on AFM or MAP sensored engines.

I run my engine on aftermarket management with a TPS only map using
a stock TPS, and my logs have never shown anything unusual with the
TPS signal.

I should have a couple extra TPS laying around. I'll try to remember to dig them out.

thanks guys!!! ill try to get to my car today and check it against ur values. the turbo manifold was leaking and one of the manifold bolts took the threads with it so i'm taking the turbo off and Heli-coiling all the manifold holes like i should have from the start...
