Relays

So, l'm having an issue with the main efi relay getting hot. This is probably just the relay going bad but l wanted to check the relay switching 'sequence' for the efi as l'm using a different ecu to switch the relays. Does anyone know, from the battery +12v the order in which they are switched and ...

Re: Starter motor

Thanks Jondee, it was somewhat of a relief when everything went back to normal!
I can only guess that the big draw of power by the starter was having an effect on the coil output and then somehow affecting the tacho.

Re: Starter motor

Update. Old starter back in and everything seems ok (including the tacho JD) It appears that both of the RG starters l have are no good, or at least need a rebuild. One does nothing but a small click and the other seems to draw a huge amount of power from the battery, enough to flatten it in a few s...

Oh dear. I f#@£ed up! Stupid, stupid mistake. The battery wire connection on the gear reduction starter is on the rear side closest to the engine block and is difficult to see, when l fitted the wire l managed to fit it with the bend in the terminal going the wrong way, upon tightening the nut the t...

Starter motor

Looking for advice on a starter motor for a high compression (12.6 : 1) 16v 4age. The standard starter copes ok until the engine is hot and then it is really slow to turn over, like there is too much ignition advance. All of the wiring is in good order. Mine is an AE86 starter, were the later smallp...

Re: Revs cut, backfires on 15° normal mode, 20° is ok

A basic test.
Make sure that TDC is actually where the crank pulley says that it is. You can do this by putting a long screwdriver down a plug hole to sit on top of the piston.
It is quite common for the crank pulley outer ring (with the timing marks on) to slip.

Let me see what l can do re a picture, it looks remarkably standard though, right down to the black timing belt covers.

Re: TVIS inlet

Just to thank everyone to start. I have decided to go with Jondee and use an adaptor plate. This solution appeals to me because as he says, it is reversible. I can always do a comparison to the modified smallport to see if there is much difference. My only slight concern with the adaptor is any bias...

I have a RWD converted smallport inlet and have the same bonnet clearance issue that Jondee mentions.
What OST has done with his inlet would be ideal for my application but I'd need to graft a TVIS top on.

Re: TVIS inlet

Thanks for the info. Jinx, the head is indeed a smallport so to use a TVIS inlet would need a conversion plate. Not ideal. I might just get away with a smallport inlet but that is also not ideal. The ideal solution would be a TVIS plenum merged onto a smallport inlet. I wonder if that might be possi...

Does anyone know the power capacity (flow rate) of a non turbocharged TVIS RWD inlet manifold with the TVIS plates removed?

Thank you for the comprehensive answers. I will continue to use normal pump fuel (E10 from September) if necessary l'll leave the car laid up with 98 RON as this will not contain Ethanol in the U.K. lt is already an expensive alternative to 95 I wonder how long is too long to leave E10 without using...

I have a 200hp+ capable smallport head that had been used with carbs. For some reason the builder decided to weld up the injection ports rather than plugging them. Any thoughts as to whether it might be salvagable to run with injectors again?

Re: Any replacement rear calipers for a GTS?

It is relatively easy to refurb your own if you can't find any. Biggest issue with calipers is corrosion behind the square section piston seal, the corrosion builds up and squeezes the seal onto the piston, the piston then fails to return. The same happens with the sliding pin, rust build up behind ...

Re: Bigport, Weird engine sound

Could be spark knock.
If the ignition timing is correct the problem may be with a failed engine sensor.
Spark knock can cause engine failure so it may be best to have it diagnosed professionally.

Re: Reviving an old chassis, alternative parts?

I guess a good question might be to ask what the car is going to be used for? You suggest decent travel suspension and if you really must have coilovers then B6 Bilstein inserts and a weld on coil over conversion kit will give you that at a decent price. Combine it with 14" 2.25" springs o...
