Re: Can we talk about some LSD's

If you jack up the rearend, put the car in gear and rotate one of the tires, I would expect you would feel some resistance even with a blown lsd. An open diff defintely feels open with no resistance. You could try removing the fill plug and shining a flashlight in the hole to try and see the diff ca...

Re: kouki and zenki jdm brackets. whats the difference?

The biggest difference between the two is that the mounting holes for the bumper skin are not in the same place. Making your own brackets from scratch are not as easy as it may seem. It's hard to reach in there and measure things accurately, so I suggest just tacking the weld so you can easily cut i...

Re: maximum bore possible

Actually, none of those are the correct answer. The only way to tell for 100% sure is to have the cylinder wall thickness ultrasonically measured. Only then can you accurately measure the maximum safe bore. 4A blocks were not all cast exactly the same and there are always imperfections in any mass p...

Re: Replacing stock exhaust manifold.

If you're in an area where you need to do a smog inspection, you may be forced to go with a stock manifold. In California, for example, there are no aftermarket exhaust manifolds or headers that are CARB certified for use on the road, so we have to run the stock manifold in order to be legal. If you...

Re: Best engine for daily driving and drifting with power.

The car will be faster with a 5-speed. More shifts = less time on the gas which turns into slower lap times. IMO, the T50 stock gearing is perfectly matched to the power band of a 4AG that is relatively close to stock. If you wind it up to over 7k rpm and shift, you're perfectly in the power band fo...

Re: Best engine for daily driving and drifting with power.

The biggest problem with both 20V engines is the hassle and expense of converting it to rwd. I'm about 90% down that road on one of my cars, and if I had it to do over, I would have just done a built 16V engine. I wasn't ok with spending $2500 for quality water relocation and distributor relocation ...

Re: What things are considered a fanboy in the AE86 world

I say, build it how you want it. It's your car, so why worry about pleasing others? In the classic car space, you run into all kinds of personalities and it's impossible to please everyone. I completely agree with fixing the problems on it. You're sure to have a lot of maintenance issues to contend ...

Re: Best engine for daily driving and drifting with power.

If you live in an area where you need to have smog inspection, you should research the smog regulations in your area before turning a wrench. In CA, there is exactly one CARB legal part available for the AE86/4AG and it is the Injen cold air intake. Everything else is illegal in California. If you'r...

Re: spam?!

Your only reliable way to curb the spam problem is to move to a user approval model. It's a pain to have to manually approve each user, but it's the only way to keep spammers out. The "good old days" of only needing to worry about keeping spambots out are long gone. There are plenty of spa...

Re: Our tail lights are reverse polarity?

On a kouki car, when the brake pedal is not depressed, the + brake wire is grounded. If you're using that to make the LEDs increase brightness, you need to put a diode in series on that circuit otherwise the circuit shorts and all your LEDs go out. A diode is like a one-way valve that will prevent t...

Re: upgrading stock brakes?

I think most things have been covered already, but here are a couple other things to consider. Steel braided brake lines have a short life expectancy when used on a daily driver. You'll likely need to replace them every few years. If you decide to go this route, stick with a quality manufacturer. Go...

Re: Our tail lights are reverse polarity?

Kouki cars reverse polarity, but zenki do not. You'll need to add a diode to your circuit to stop the short. a 1/2 watt diode should be enough. Test with a multimeter and you'll see what is happening. It's a simple problem to fix.
