Re: oil level at idle and at 5000rpm
So we've been sort of left to die on the vine. I know the 4age isn't cutting edge, and I realize that as a group we aren't an advertiser's dream. Here I am, trying to build a half-assed sports car on a piggy bank budget (as oldskewl, bless his heart, knows too well) and the info that would help is d...

Re: lightweight flywheel
Thank you. Any opinion of the lightweight kits offered on ebay? I posted this thread because none of the clutch/flywheel kits (other than OEM) were listed as compatible w/ae82.

lightweight flywheel
I'd like to get a lightweight flywheel for my ae82. I think I read that mr2 '85-'88 was the same. Is this so? I tried a topic search in this forum and the engine forum, but got no help What does "the specified back end search does not exist' mean?

Re: 4AGE CAMS... AGAIN
Thank you both for your responses. I am: looking for something I can slap together and run; I've averaged 5k miles a year for the past 12 years on my current fx16; I won't be racing it, but I will be backroading it, and let me tell you SW Va. has some great twisties; I don't want to or intend to go ...

Over in 4age tech I posted questions about cams for a 4age bigport. Would this apply?

4AGE CAMS... AGAIN
OK, I'm finally getting an engine together- 4age bigport. I've got some one oversize 10.3:1 pistons on 40 mm rods, I'm cleaning up a head, I've got a light weight flywheel coming, and now I'm looking at cams. I've read the threads I can find here, some going back to '08, and I'm still not clear abou...

Re: 4AF engine swap for something else
I'm in the very slow process of swapping a 4af out of an '88 Corolla fx, intending to replace it w/a 4age I have on hand. I've pulled the dash apart and I'm pulling the wiring harness out. the 4af is carb, the 4age is f.i. the wiring harness on the driver's side is the same in both models. the harne...

Re: 4a block, compression numbers
So where we're at is the middle of winter and no garage. I tried to upload a picture of three amorphous mounds of snow that is my ae82 collection. I'll try the leak down test and check valve lash when we get a break in the weather on a day I'm not working. I sincerely hope that's soon. forecast is f...

Don't now what a 'quick and dirty' leak down test is. I could check valve lash. Be a good idea, anyway.

Re: 4a block, compression numbers
Basically, before the compression test I assumed I had a fine running engine. There were, and are, no symptoms to indicate otherwise. I took the test with the ignition disconnected, start injector disconnected, WOT and all the plugs out. The numbers were so far off I took my newly-purchased compress...

Re: 4a block, compression numbers
I've expressed myself poorly. I have two complete fx16s here waiting to be dismembered. One is the unit with the mystery compression numbers. In addition, I have a complete twin cam head w/intake and exhaust siting in storage. I know I have to change everything- wiring, computer, install a manual tr...

Re: 4a block, compression numbers
Another quote that might apply: "When ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise". the reason I'm asking whether the 4ac and the 4age are the same except for the cylinder heads is that the fx with the 4ac that I've recently bought has the best compression numbers, and I have more twin cam h...

manual steering on ae82
I have bought an '88 FX with the 4ac engine and manual steering. I'm going to convert it to a 4age. My questions is about the steering. I'm assuming the manual steering is a slower low-ratio, and that power steering would be a faster high-ratio steering. Is it worthwhile to convert to power steering...

Re: 4a block, compression numbers
If I hadn't done the test I'd never have wondered. I've done the test a few times. I'm inclined to put the tester away and not think about it.
Thanks for the info on the 4a block.

Re: Vacuum diagram for an '87 FX16 GTS
I have the same manual as Oldeskewltoy, but no good way to copy and paste it. However, in the diagrams, page one, section seven, shows the emissions circuits, but no idle up valve (Oldeskewltoy's post). Page 2, sections five and six show the a/c circuits and the vsv idle up, electrical and mechanica...

4a block, compression numbers
I have a couple of questions about the 4a block. Do the 4ac and the 4age have the same block and internals? i.e is the only difference the cylinder head? Compression: I have an ae82 with the 4age. I checked compression on it and came up with #1 at 90#, #2 at 50#, #3 at 125#, and #4 at 135. the engin...

I look at the stuff you guys come up with, and toss off so casually, and I think I'm lucky to know how to change a spark plug. Ratranger, I'd do 'em on the CNC machine just to learn how.

Re: yoshi - 4agte question
Thanks. I have a strong, and so far justified, faith in the durability of the 4ag. On the basis of what you've said I'm willing to put a turbo on this block and see what happens. If it blows, I still have the turbo and two more engines waiting in the wings. Can you give me specifics? The turbo for t...

Re: yoshi - 4agte question
Counsel me here. I have some familiarity with NA upgrades on small block Ford V-8s. I know that I can bore and upgrade pistons, and I know I can set some better cams in place, (a lot of posts here on cams for the NA 4age) and, with a lighter flywheel pick up a lot of the response I'm looking for. A...

Re: yoshi - 4agte question
I have an ae82 that I'd like to bump the power on. I've been reading the post on turbos that you put up a year or so ago, along w/comments, particularly by jinx and jondee (I believe that's the first time I've seen him ASK a question.) Jinx referred to a project by neil8586, but I haven't been able ...
