I have heard that if you install the gear backwards it will put you a half a tooth off. I forget if it's spinning it 180 or flipping it top to bottom but make sure that gear is installed exactly as it was before you removed it.

It's unlikely but a big hole in a piston could cause zero compression :twisted: I would do a leakdown just to try to get a good idea of what you will need when you get in there. Is there any possible way you have a sticking valve or maybe a tight shim? I can't think of too many reasons why it would do what you describe but a leak on the compression stroke blowing air back out the intake seems about as logical as anything.
