40mm rods, crank and flywheel

I have a 40mm crank and rods with a light flywheel (I believe it is 9lbs) with a new pressure plate. I have a set of ARP rod bolts that go with the rods. I also have an oil pan that was baffled and had the volume increased. I have a JDM block posted elsewhere here as well so this would be a duplicat...

Is there a way to adjust your pinion preload?? What is the condition of your tie rods? Tie rod ends> Ball joints and bushings? Rack can actually be fine if with other issues in the suspension. My 2c.

Re: Alternator Preference

I'm with UNLIMITED 86 on this one. There are quite a few shops that can do this for you. You can have your alternator built to your specs as well! Have a high current rating for a lot of audio equipment or lower output for less load on the engine for track. I had the alternator in my '83 Celica woun...

Re: 4AGZE N/A conversion/differences between 4AGE and 4AGZE

Trade the GZE for a GE and start from there. In the area you are looking to build to "cheap" means early engine failure. You wouldn't have to remove as much from the head and using a thin MLS gasket would reduce the necessary machine work further. With cams in the "288-304" range...

Re: draw thru 4age update and question!

Not that I've experienced. Intake systems for a draw through system are small, no intercooler and piping to increase the volume of the intake. Reason for such a design is to reduce the possibility of driving around with a bomb under your bonnet. An inline engine may have a bit more piping, a VW woul...

Re: draw thru 4age update and question!

For idle screw setting, 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 turns out. If you can't get response from a full turn in either direction then your jetting needs attention. And we go back to cam timing here too. Carbs need a good vacuum to operate properly in the idle and bypass circuits(fuel draw, atomization, etc..). Cam t...

Re: draw thru 4age update and question!

Cam timing?? Does adjusting the idle screw make ANY difference? Dirt in idle circuit or jetting could be off. If the cam timing is off idle will be really difficult to maintain and can cause the that kind of surge in RPM. Been a long time. No bypass would be needed with a draw through as the throttl...

Re: draw through turbo 4age!

If you want to build the carb for extreme use look into "dry sump" mods. I've done this on some VW engines and my carby crawler. Great mod for extreme angles and off road bouncing around. It eliminates the float and needle valve and involves a return pump, fuel cell foam and baffling. Best...

22R carby. I've seen these go a million miles. My '81 Celica had 600k+ before the cancer took it. Yeah, the 'R' family engines are damn near bulletproof. The engine and trans in this truck came from an '83 Celica.

1981 Toyota pickup anyone?

I just picked up a 4Runner and no longer need my little '81 pickup. Runs good, just passed smog (CA vehicle), tagged (good through January, 2018), clean title. Couple of boxes of parts as well, some new, urethane bushings and ball joints, discs and pads. Some used, spare carb, power steering parts. ...

Re: 4age PCV how does it work

I wouldn't plug the pipe, you want the crankcase to vent the blow-by. Putting a filter on the nipple would drip the condensed oil onto the manifold and make a mess. Best bet would be a catch can, or even a 'road draft tube' to direct the oil vapors away from the engine. You would want a filter on an...

Re: head work or bottom end?

With the 272 cams I'd kick the limit to 8500. IF you were to go the other way, block, I'd say put the funds into a 7A block and build a 7AGE. Not as rev happy but the torque increase is worth it. If you were to go this direction a light flywheel and rods will help with the "sluggishness" m...

Re: FAT racing manifold worth it?

This is from my Vdub days, but running a single carb compared to dual. single was a bit peaky and tended to favor the top end(weird since the runners were quite long) while the bottom was choppy off throttle. Part of the issues were due to manifold design and carb used, steel tube mani with Weber 44...

Re: head work or bottom end?

Headwork! Just know the limitations of the bottom end. No sense in building a top end to destroy the bottom end. Typically, the bottom end can handle 9000rpm with the weak link being the oil pump. My current engine is running 8500rpm limiter with a totally stock bottom( yeah it bounces a lot and I c...

Re: Bluetop 16V + Poncams + Pistons = ?

If you are planning to go as far as that in your mods, and keep the stock ECU, at least consider a wideband AFR monitor and some kind of piggy back to make minor adjustments. You can use the Apexi AFC or a Greddy E-manage (examples) for piggy back. The E-manage stsarts getting close to the price of ...

OK, warning on using the 'T' word, you're gonna get a flogging. But from one that actually understands what you're saying.... Use the small port head and manifold. Keep the stock valve size, and do a good port clean up. If your budget can allow, Extrudehone the manifold. Keep the cam duration on the...
