Re: Need help and pointers on building a Blue Top 4age

I'll step out of the deep technical discussion, but since you mentioned keeping the stock ECU and fuel system, here are a couple points to consider. The AFM is very restrictive, and the largest reason why the MAP equipped markets had higher horsepower than the AFM equipped markets. Even with complet...

Re: Help! 4age 16v rebuild

Here's what I would suggest doing: 1. As ZINCHOTRAN said, get the service manual and read it over to familiarize yourself on how the engine is put together. 2. Tear down the donor engine and measure all reusable parts to see if they are in spec and reusable. All of the specs are in the service manua...

Re: Need help and pointers on building a Blue Top 4age

Be careful about going too crazy with internal mods. More compression and bigger cams mean that you need more fuel. This means you will need bigger fuel injectors and might need to mess with the AFM to change the richness. The stock ECU map is not versatile enough to handle heavy mods. I gave it a g...

Re: Need help and pointers on building a Blue Top 4age

Welcome. After having built a few engines for these cars, here are some things that might be of interest. Obviously, the service manual is going to be your best friend, so be sure to read up on everything before turning a wrench. Personally, I don't see the value in getting caught up in a horsepower...

Re: axle replacement question

I'd replace the seal while you're in there. It might not seal well after you pull the axle and you won't know until you put it back together and drive for a while. Harbor Freight has a good seal puller. You can also get these at most auto parts stores.

Toyota coil plugs question

I'm planning to use Toyota (Diamond brand) coils, part# 90080-19025. They look to be the standard 4 wire connector used on the 1ZZ and 2ZZ engines that everyone uses coil plugs from, but I can't find anything on the pinout for this model coil. According to the interwebz, the 1ZZ coil has this pinout...

Re: Aftermarket carb exempt exhaust??

If you have anything other than the stock manifold, downpipe and cat, you've been lucky. You might get lucky and find a tech that can't be bothered to check if you have a CARB approved cat, since it's a hassle to get under there, though. Anything after the cat doesn't matter as far as smog goes.

Re: Engine start problem

There is no crank angle sensor on any variation of 4AGE. The factory service manual has the test procedure for the IAT sensor. The ECU uses the IAT temp reading to adjust the fuel mixture, so if it is not reading the same temp as the air entering the throttles, the engine isn't going to run correctly.

I assumed they were all the same too, but I compared random samples from a spare largeport head that I have with the smallport ones. The largeport ones are definitely thicker.

There are none. You should be able to find a cracked stocker and have it welded. Should be under $100 to have the weld done correctly for cast iron.

Re: HELP! Supertech Retainer / stock buckets

Get a set of largeport keepers and use those instead. They are slightly thicker than smallport ones or the ones provided by Supertech. There also seems to be some difference in the diameter hole on the Supertech retainers from one to the next. I've had two valves slip to the point where there was no...

It might be easier to use a normal nut and a jam nut rather than an aircraft nut. You could try getting some gloves that have rubber coating on the palm to hold the strut shaft and use an impact gun to get the nut to go on. Once you get the aircraft nut over the threads for the first time, it should...

Re: Who runs without timing belt covers ?

I run them so that I don't break timing belts. Even with the covers, rocks find ways to get in and poke holes in the belt or grind parts of it away. I can't imagine running a timing belt engine without the covers, honestly.

Check to make sure all of the intake ports are open. Both of the blacktops that I rebuilt had completely clogged center intake ports and I needed to use a chisel to get all the carbon out of them.

^ Agreed. The 16v heads do not have an internal oil drain on the intake side and this causes oil to collect in the head and get blown out the crankcase breather under high load left hand turns. You definitely want to have it functioning. That's why I retrofitted a bung on my oilpan. It's not expensi...

I've been tracking my car with the stock radiator for years. Even with the AC condenser in front of it, the temp stays dead in the middle of the gauge. Personally, I'd spend that money somewhere else on the car.

Re: What is Max safe C.R using 91 octane Calif gas?

I'm running 11:1 Supertech pistons with Poncams and 91 octane. No audible pinging with around 12 deg timing advance. FWIW, happily ran 89 octane on my previous engine that had smallport high comp pistons and Poncams with 12 deg ignition timing.
