Re: Brake Woes

If you retract the pistons fully, everything should fit. I run Hawk pads and they don't require any mods to get them to fit. If the pads have a little raised bump, it needs to fit into the matching indentation on the piston to stop the piston from turning. Make sure that lines up, as well. That's wh...

Re: 2-way LSD Question

It has a lot to do with the amount of acceleration you use. If you're driving sensibly in a parking lot and need to make a tight turn to enter a parking stall, you will notice a big difference. The 2-way will feel like an open diff under those circumstances. If you are using heavy acceleration, the ...

Re: Traction Brackets...

In a perfect world, you would want the upper and lower links to be the same length, parallel to each other and roughly parallel to the road surface. Traction brackets can help you achieve near parallel to the road surface on the lower links, but there is no way to do this on the upper links without ...

If the sound stays the same whether coasting, accelerating or in between, it's bearings. If it's only under acceleration or coasting, it's gears.

Humming is usually bearings. If you have a panhard bar and/or 4-links with spherical bearings, they will transmit the sound into the cockpit more than if you have bushings too.

Re: IRS for AE86

IMO, part of the charm of the AE86 is the fact that it has a live axle rearend. Being busy in the cockpit is what makes these cars fun to drive. If you want to turn it into a Miata, you're better off just buying a Miata for the times when you want to go fast and leave the Corolla alone for times tha...

Re: Suspension help for a Noob

From my experience, you kind of have to pick street or track setup. What is good on the street doesn't work that well on track and vice versa. You really need more than 4 deg of camber up front if you want to get the most out of the tires and make the car turn, but that makes the car a handful on th...

Re: Aftermarket "OEM style" pistons

If the shop hasn't already started working on the block, you should tell them to hold off until you have pistons. You normally give them the pistons and block at the same time, then specify the piston clearance and they measure the pistons and bore to your spec.

If the VVT gear seal is bad, oil can leak out, but it would leak on to the front of the engine, so you wouldn't see smoke out the tailpipe.

Re: Black Top ITBS On 16 Valve 4AGE

This is especially true if you have a largeport head. ITBs need air velocity in order to make power and the large ports hurt you unless you have a lot more done to the engine. If you want more power, why not get a set of Poncams? They are a great mod to an otherwise stock 4age.

Did they measure the bores for round before assembly? Did they hone the bores and did you properly bed in the rings? Blue smoke = oil burning You might try running the Toyota recommend oil too. I can't remember what it is supposed to be, but it will be in the service manual for the AE111. 5W might b...

Re: tires rubbing

You need to cut all of the inner lip off the fender. If you don't, the tire will grab it under compression and pull the whole mess out and bend up the fender. Under full lock, you're probably also rubbing on the inside of the wheel well. You'll see a nice black scuff mark where it is rubbing.

Why are they a wear item? The only thing that wears on the hub are the bearing races and seals and those are replacable.

Since you are not familiar with the car, I'd skip this one and guy an original GTS. I'm running something similar to Jimmee. I have smallport 10.1:1 pistons and Poncams with otherwise largeport everything. I cleaned up the bowls and matched the exhaust ports, as well. It runs happily on 89 octane fuel and pulls all the way to rev cut.

It sounds like you haven't driven an AE86 with a relatively fresh 4AGE engine in it. You really should drive one and decide if you really want to go gonzo on it. The car is plenty fun with stock power or with minor mods. My 99 MIata sits in the driveway housing spiders while my Corolla is on track. ...

What problem are you trying to solve? With somewhat close to stock engine power levels, there is no reason to change to larger rotors or different calipers. Flush out the brake system and replace it with fresh high temperature brake fluid and run some good performance pads. That's all you need to do...

Re: Extending Stock Control Arms Discussion

There are a number of other Toyotas that have longer lcas that you can mix & match at a low cost. The biggest problem is that the swaybar endlinks don't line up nicely, so you might need to come up with a way to do spherical bearing endlinks if you go with another Toyota's oem lcas. That's what ...

Re: California legal problems: swapping 4ag's

There are plenty of guys running around NorCal with all of the above. There are a couple BAR 4AGZE cars here and I think you can probably fly under the radar with a smallport if you don't say anything. The problem with a smallport is that you'll either need to do a cut/reweld on the smallport intake...

Your state's DMV should be able to answer the question of whether it was reported stolen there. Unfortunately, I don't think there is a national database that you can easily access, but I guess you could try your local police department.

Honestly, it's very easy to check the clearances and change the shims. You can get the correct range feeler gauge at your local auto parts store for under $10. You can swap shims without needing to take the cams out, but since you'll already have it apart, I find it easier to measure all of the valv...
