Re: Lit'lphant - Toyota's Hemi V8

I has been a while....... the engine has finally been torn down to the last nut and bolt. The good news is all the bearings show little or no sign of wear (YEAH!), the oil pump, and housing also show no sign of wear(YEAH!), and the final bit of good news is the timing chain, and tensioners show only...

Nicely done! I always thought the manufacturers should have used threaded fitting instead of pressed-in tubes. Not that I've had issues with Toyotas in the area, but I've had problems with many other manufacturers, especially German autos. @$!?)*$# Volkswagen! along those lines... German Fords too....

The gaskets have arrived, I'll be laying them up on the block and intake manifold in the next day or 2 to make sure it all lines up. Still don't have timing cover, or water pump gaskets - I'll be concerned about that later if I need too. In the mean time I've been thinking about the ignition system ...

20V shim tolerances are pretty bad. I've now had new, as well as old shims, and in some cases the shims vary by as much as .001" (up to as much as +, or - .0005" either way). I have purchased shims now from a supplier here in the USA, as well as directly from Japan. http://ost.ebeans.ch/al...

Re: OST-053: Massaging a 20V Blacktop

For all the 16v heads you've done, I can imagine that the 16v bank is more than double the size of the 20v bank there  actually I have more than double of my total of 20V shims in 3.00mm 16V shims alone :o Dan, do you have the dimensions (preferably in mm) of the (lash cap) shims ? Well... as I expand to include more 20V head work, I'll need to expand my shim bank. Here are about 3 heads worth of shims http://ost.ebeans.ch/albums/userpics/10005/shim_bank1.jpg Up until recently I kept all the 20V shims in a tiny ziplock bag... but with more use, it just doesn't pay to measure a...
