Thanks Jondee. I'm guessing I would check for the AC ripple by setting my meter to AC and then any specific voltage range? Would that be a bad diode in the sensing wire coming off the alt ( I have installed one there) or would that be a diode in the alternator itself?

the only issue with using a 20V block is one of the cast reinforcements (with /T50) will not mount to the block. Jinx is right, it wouldn't hurt to open up the ECU and look for bad capacitors. If they are swelled or leaking it can cause all sorts of issues. It's an easy cheap fix.
