Re: alternator is overcharging

After checking everything I could think of and running additional ground wires I was at my wits end. I finally decided to check the multimeter itself and found it was off by over two volts. I checked it against three of my brother’s meters that were all consistent. So the alt is putting out 14 volts...

Re: alternator is overcharging

Ah thanks for that, very helpful. I didn't do the wiring on the car myself so I'm not sure where that sense wire is connected. I may just re-wire it temporarily directly to the positive on the battery to see if that does the trick. But first I'll try and track that wire. Some have said that center p...

Re: alternator is overcharging

Jon thanks for the article. I did check the alternator for spikes and for ripple AC voltage. My multimeter is not super sophisticated but it showed a consistent AC cycle but no spikes. On an additional test drive the engine developed a bad miss fire under load. Years ago this happened due to a bad c...

Re: alternator is overcharging

Thanks Jondee. I'm guessing I would check for the AC ripple by setting my meter to AC and then any specific voltage range? Would that be a bad diode in the sensing wire coming off the alt ( I have installed one there) or would that be a diode in the alternator itself?

alternator is overcharging

While installing a new battery and checking voltage with my multimeter I found the Alternator sending 17 volts. Not wanting to fry my ECU I took the cover off of the alt and put a new voltage regulator into the alternator. It is still overcharging at 15 to 16 volts. Is there something else wrong wit...

the only issue with using a 20V block is one of the cast reinforcements (with /T50) will not mount to the block. This is correct one of the (feather braces) as Toyota calls them will not mount the T50 trans to a Sivertop block but I found I could easily modify one of the bolt holes in the brace to ...

Re: Silvertop Engine Codes.

Jinx is right, it wouldn't hurt to open up the ECU and look for bad capacitors. If they are swelled or leaking it can cause all sorts of issues. It's an easy cheap fix. If I remember there are 7 of them to replace. Here is a pic of them. Mine were bad. I think I paid two bucks for each one. https://...

One more opinion for you. I was told years ago that the OEM filter is 90915-YZZB6 but I doubt you can find one in the US. Amazon comes up with the one you currently have installed when I search for this old OEM number. Or get one here that you know will work. https://shop.battlegarage-rs.com/product...

Correct Operating Temperature?

I want to install a temp switch for the radiator fan on my Silvertop. I'm wondering what temp setting I should aim for? I know the thermostat opens at 82c 179 f but what is the ideal operating temperature. I was thinking of using a switch that would turn on the fan at 93c 200f and off at 85c 185f. A...

Re: 1986 Toyota Corolla SR5 4AC hard time starting

Could be many reasons. Check your timing. Have you got a clean air cleaner element and new spark plugs? Could be a cracked vacuum line somewhere. How does it run once you are warmed up and going down the road?

I believe those two are interchangeable, the 71 is just newer. They need to be marked MT (manual transmission). I've read that the difference between the early and late st ecu's is that the later ones will support cooling fans but I have not tested this. If you do buy one be sure to open it up and c...

Re: What's inside the 4AGE 16V TPS ??

Interesting, I have wondered what was in there. I also wonder what makes one different from another for various engines. Is it simply the bolt and throttle fitting? And when they go bad is it just wear of the wiper tracks? They seem to cost more than they should. Anyway thanks for getting us to blac...

Hey your English is pretty good. Much better than my Finnish or Swedish. Are you running a distributor? If so open up the cap and check for moisture, also check the wire ports on top of the cap for moisture. You can also check the coil connections and make sure that it has a good ground/earth contac...

Correct alternator for Silvertop?

My alternator's voltage regulator is failing and will sometimes spike voltage up to 19 volts when it heats up so time for a new alternator. The part number of the original is 27060-16320 I believe and is a 70 amp. Problem is that no one in the states carries that one. Would it be ok to substitute an...

Re: Distributor Pickup Coil Question

Dave I used the Toyota part number (90919-02197) at Rockauto and came up with a Delphi coil (GN 10175) for $45. Amazon has a big selection also. The Toyota dealer wanted $140. I've got almost a hundred miles on it now, seems to be doing fine.
