Re: Return #5: Spare engine boogaloo

I had a bunch of issues with things outside of the engine. But I made my deadline and went on my trip. The new engine performs good so far. Sounds nice and runs great... until it didn't. One of the rubber flanges I mount my carbs in decided to break the night before causing the engine to run on thre...

Re: Return #5: Spare engine boogaloo

As you mentioned you believe you were out of spec.......... Still had one crank that was good to go. There was a distinct difference between the good and the bad. Checked the main and rod bearing clearances as the Toyota repair manual said and it was good. https://i.imgur.com/s2tPSvr.jpg Deadline i...

Out on deep waters with measurements and honing equipment. https://i.imgur.com/im3b1PG.jpg Things look to be in order with the 7-rib block. One crank is good to go. Checked the pistons quickly and they seem to be ok. I will do the proper calculations on tolerances to the cylinders next.

Re: Return #5: Spare engine boogaloo

In my hunt for bearings I got some from the local Toyota dealer. When they showed up it turned out it was only ONE of each. One crank bearing, one rod bearing. Doing the math of how much a full set would cost me I noped out. With Flo's being closed for vacation I don't know where to find bearings in...

Re: HIGH comp Big port carby build with MANY questions

Is that a crack in the liner on the far left...??? Looks a bit too vertical... Maybe? I haven't inspected the block cause I have no plans on using it ever. I'm pretty sure those lines were there when I got it back from the machine shop but I couldn't feel them so I didn't really care. I'll take a l...

Re: Return #5: Spare engine boogaloo

I'll update this thread and leave the old one. I dissasembled the 7-rib block and found bearings that were not in the best shape. The crank bearings were worn but not discolored in any way. Conrod bearings were worn and brown-ish in some places. I meassured the crank and the rod journals seem to be ...

Re: HIGH comp Big port carby build with MANY questions

I cleaned the piston off to check for damage, that'swhy it's so much cleaner than the other one. Although there has been water in the cylinders too for sure. The image is cylinder #4 and it is pretty fucked. My guess is due to the ring gap being too tight, maybe? The block is done so I'm moving on. ...

Return #5: Spare engine boogaloo

As expected my engine build did not last long. It's time to salvage what's possible. More details coming tomorrow but for now I have one question. Is it possible to use a big port (ae86) head on a 7-rib (smallport, ae92) block? The block has what looks like an external oil return. The internal retur...

Re: HIGH comp Big port carby build with MANY questions

I've got a 3 layer 0.5mm TRD gasket laying around. But there's a reason why I didn't use that the first time around... Engine is a big port, head is shaved a bit (just to resurface after warping, not with the intention to increase compression), stroke is standard but the pistons are some wisecos wit...

Re: HIGH comp Big port carby build with MANY questions

I'm curious as to why your temperature would go up to 90 and then drop quickly when you rev the engine. Do you have a thermostat installed ? Do you have an electric cooling fan ? I'm pretty sure the water doesn't circulate as well on idle cause of the radiator size. If I look in to the radiator whe...

Might as well continue on this thread as it exists and it is about the same engine. Everything is chugging along nicely. First few dyno pulls are done. And it runs pretty good. My carb adjustments do not seem to be close to yours though, mr2mk1Hero.. It ran on 160 main jets, and it still needs more fuel. I haven't played with the needles at all though cause I can't figure out how to separate the needle from the diaphr...

As someone who has gone through a carb build here's my advice. Get an AFR gauge if you haven't already. I think I remember your name actually, we messaged on Instagram once? Re: HIGH comp Big port carby build with MANY questions

I'm curious about the 22psi variance for one cylinder since it's a 10%+ gap from the other three cylinders on a fresh build. Hot or cold test? If cold, try one at temp. Motor run in enough for the rings to be seated? Did the combustion chambers hold alcohol/water once the valves were lapped? Valve ...

Re: HIGH comp Big port carby build with MANY questions

- Blowby is primarily driven by the combustion pressure which is many times higher than the cranking pressures. So blowby is pretty much proportional to engine rpm. A new engine with tight clearances and good ring sealing won't have a lot of blowby and the standard single cam cover vent will be ade...

Ended up having a bigger wheel fabricated and welded to the smaller wheel on the carbs. Need to relocate the cable a bit for it to be 100% but it seems like a good solution since removing the stock wheel seemed hard on my carbs.

Bike carb conversion: Gas pedal travel issue

Been building a 16v on carbs for a while now. Gonna run Mikuni carbs from a Kawasaki Ninja ZX6R. Today I ran in to an issue while trying out throttle cables.
