Re: Rebuilding/remanufacturing racks

Honestly forgot how tiny our racks are end to end. About 21.75" to the pivot points. Even na/NB miatas are 24". A Mustang II rack may be an option, but it would have to be shortened - and the rod ends figured out bin diving with calipers and tapes. They're also generally cheap and p...

You're in socal? Yeah, I'm in Irvine. Guess it's next to impossible to find even power steering racks from ACDelco and the like now. https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/toyota,1985,corolla,1.6l+l4+dohc,1274880,steering,rack+and+pinion,7388 ACDelco ps rack, $127... Re: Rebuilding/remanufacturing racks

Forgot I had asked this question, but I'm still dealing with the situation. Guess it's next to impossible to find even power steering racks from ACDelco and the like now. I called up an axle rebuilding place in Huntington Beach and they said they'd take a look at the manual rack. Need to track down ...

Interesting. Never thought of going that route. Do you know about how long that would take to manufacture? My only issue is that I'm in somewhat of a rush to revamp my steering.

Rebuilding/remanufacturing racks

I bought an AW11 manual rack a while ago and was faced with something that looked like it sat outside for 10 years. It still functions, but there is rust and all the seals are done. Lots of play in it. Is it possible to send these out for remanufacturing? Would the cost be prohibitive? My depowered ...

Re: What's your other car?

I lease a 2015 Scion tC at the moment. My contract ends in May and I plan on turning it back in, really wanting to get an early 2000s Land Cruiser or 4Runner. Something I can haul my music gear around in. I tore up the hatch in the tC loading/unloading all my guitar amps and stuff haha. People talk...

Re: What's your other car?

2017 Toyota 86, 860 edition. Got it specifically for a daily driver cause the AE86 brings too much attention. It's reliable so far, I just wanted something that is fun to drive and not have to worry about for a while. Being the so-called predecessor of the AE86 is an added bonus as well. Only downs...

What's your other car?

What else do you drive? What do you think of it and how does it compare to your 86? Do you only care about reliability, do you look for a totally different experience, or is it all about practicality? Thought it would be interesting to see what everyone values in their daily or other projects. Havin...

I haven't seen another AE86 in like half a year. Seems like 5 years ago there were at least a couple in my area.

If any of you are alive in the OC area, I'd be down to join a meet.

Re: AE86 Hatchback Pics

Anyone still have their cars? Sold my Corolla in 2016, but I needed it back. Picked it up from my friend in Boulder in March. 1100 miles in 20 hours and it was back home in California. Only killed the starter halfway through. New transmission and no more power steering, but also new levels of paint ...

Zenki door panel cup repro feeler

I've got a prosthetist friend who showed interest when I told him about my failed attempts at making replacement door cups for the molded, single piece zenki door panels. The ones I had were UV degraded beyond reasonable repair, and I'm assuming that's a common issue. I was never able to find replac...

Re: WTB T50 rebuild parts

Thanks for the replies. I was trying to source these parts for my friend who's working on my old 85 GTS. We decided to go for an entire T50 for the moment since the old one's been a major hassle for years, but I'll let you know if the new one's gonna need parts.

Re: Ignition but car dies after starter wire replacement

I'll give it a shot. Could the exhaust manifold have anything to do with this? I'm still using the old metal gasket that was on it when I had to move the manifold a couple inches to get to the starter stuff.

Re: Ignition but car dies after starter wire replacement

Well, the starter still works and the dizzy doesn't need a rebuild, but I can't get it to hold an idle at all now. Just cranks with a little sputtering. Engine was at TDC with the crankshaft pulley gear at the 0 mark. The two camshaft gears were also aligned. Could see the dimple through the oil cap...

Ignition but car dies after starter wire replacement

I had a broken plastic clip on the starter motor wire that kept popping off. I swapped in an entire new wire from battery to starter after much hassle. I had to remove the distributor to do this, so I expect the ignition timing is now off, but the last time I just reinserted the broken clip, the car...

Might be easier fitting another starter motor. Mine has snapped in exactly the same place. I bought a new starter motor just before I discovered that my old one wasn't actually dead and before I saw that the wire was just knocked loose. The problem isn't with the starter's clip but on the wire lead...

Re: AE86 Good Drivers Car?

Yea, I know they're going to be slow, my Z has roughly 380-400 whp (which is honestly too fast in my opinion). So I know it would be quite different in that respect. But since I'm generally a safe/conservative driver most of that power is wasted for me. You get the sensation of speed. Stupid amount...

Re: AE86 Good Drivers Car?

It sounds like an 86 is what you're looking for, but if your budget and expectations include a Caterham and Lotus, you may not be instantly satisfied if you get one. They can take a lot of work and money to bring back to form. It's possible to get a nice one straight off for $6-10k, but immaculately...
