Re: Sw20 seats in an 86?
I'm pretty sure 3 of the 4 bolts line right up. One needs a pretty tall spacer welded to the SW20 track (I think inside rear IIRC -- maybe outside rear....). I've done it -- Now that's for a TE72, but I'm pretty sure AE86 seats bolt right in a TE72.... So....

Re: Differential Sounds Like A Jet Turbine
^^^ Weir says right in his solid pinion spacer to reef the pinion nut down with an impact... Impacting tapered roller bearings is just bad advice. With a solid spacer, it is a bit different, but with a crush sleeve it's a total no no because that torque is what gives the pinion bearing its preload ...

Re: Differential Sounds Like A Jet Turbine
It sounds like an improper setup to me too. It's a very, very fussy thing to set up a diff properly. Ask the shop if they use an impact gun to do ANY of the assembly and setup. If they do, go somewhere that does it right -- by hand. I've heard things about slightly noisy 4.77s from Weir -- but I bet...

Re: little help.. rear end identify
You should research further -- but as far as I can remember, only OE Toyota LSDs use axles that are 6 or 8mm shorter (?? exactly?). I'm pretty sure that TRD LSDs don't need shorter axles. Hopefully someone will chime in. Aftermarket LSDs definitely don't need shorter... Your second diff pictured isn...

Re: little help.. rear end identify
The first axles (with the narrow bearings) look like SR5 S-code 6.38" AE86 axles ... or T-code (6.7") old Celica axles (they're about 1/2" longer than 6.7" 86 axles... about 27.5") Non-LSD Zenki 86 axles are about 27" long from the wheel mounting surface. Splines are 24...

Re: differential/rear end sr5
Any 6.38 S-code, 8-bolt rear axle will bolt in... So yes. You might want to confirm the gear ratio before you commit to the new one.... R&P ratios from autos are different from manual AE86s -- and E70s are different again. If your car has a stock manual and you change to an auto ratio, you'll be...

AE71 factory Caster spec?
I'm looking for the factory caster spec for AE71 Sedan. AE86 is 2°45' according to intenets TE72 is 1°46' (+/- 30') according to my FSM An Ae71 is like a TE72 with a 4A crossmember.... so I wonder if the 4A crossmember adds caster. I don't think so. When I measure my TE72 Sedan with a 4A crossmember...

Ok you win. I'm schooled. I was taught about shrinkage otherwise.... backyard-style.
So, you see no way to shrink the hole with heat? Even if you think it imprudent?

Re: Ball Joints & Lower Control Arms
I get where you're coming from, but chill out a bit. I did advise to research shrinking steel. Obviously there is a limit to how much steel will shrink... It will shrink once from where it started when originally formed. Ever welded? Steel shrinks. I have a shrinking tip for my MIG welder.... Try he...

Re: Ball Joints & Lower Control Arms
Steel shrinks more than it expands when heated. Period.
LCAs are not hardened. They are stamped mild steel. Heat it, let it cool and it does not change.

Re: Ball Joints & Lower Control Arms
I think hole in the LCA stretches when the balljoint is pressed out... It may not be the balljoint's OD that's wrong.. Metallurgically, it's 100% fine to heat it.

Re: Ball Joints & Lower Control Arms
I would think so... It doesn't need a great deal of heat. Research shrinking steel. It's very common in bodywork... Don't quench it.... let it cool on its own.
Start slowly and try... Heating mild steel does not harm it or change its properties -- unless it is quenched... then it hardens.

Re: Ball Joints & Lower Control Arms
I had this problem with TRW ball joints on one LCA... The hole in the LCA was the problem. I had it tacked in very carefully with a TIG welder... a common thing to do around here. Next time, I will try to shrink the hole with a torch.... Heating steel shrinks (edit: when it cools normally) it if you...

Measure your T50 shifter ball!
If you have a T50 shifter plus calipers, would you measure the ball for me? I'm making a batch of bronze shifter bushings and I want to make sure the shifters are all the same. Mine is .5495" or 13.96mm. Thanks! http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg520/BeRock/T50ShiftBall.jpg
