Re: AE86 TopShelf build

Quick question I'll post here because I don't want to clutter up other threads. The rust on the rear passenger side quarter panel behind the door, does anyone make replacement sheet metal for that that I can weld in? No, you will have to find someone that is parting out a car, a junkyard that still...

Can you post a few pictures of the rose joint on the brake MC piston rod? I am really interested to see your placement and orientation on that!

Re: What kind of insurance do you have on your AE86?

Thanks a lot for this information... very helpful for me at least. Do you know what the average mileage limitations are? 1000 something miles? I went with what seems to be the standard 2500 mile limitation. I have put less than a thousand per year on over the last two years though. I believe you ca...

Re: What kind of insurance do you have on your AE86?

Insurance through a normal underwriter will value our cars at around $400, and if you have receipts for parts that are under 2 years old then you might be able to haggle for a small fraction of that as well. In 2007 I had a pleasant experience with Farmers where I had a heavily modified SCCA road ra...

Re: Looking at a car.

Common rust spots are:
1) Under the battery tray
2) Engine bay on firewall bellow brake booster and CMC.
3) Inside cabin drivers side firewall near pedals down to the floor pan
4) Trunk, especially the side pockets (where the jack and tire tool are/were)
5) Rocker Panels

Boss is pretty much the cheapest you can get. http://www.ebay.com/itm/JDM-STEERING-WHEEL-HUB-ADAPTER-BOSS-KIT-CAMRY-COROLLA-MR2-AE86-CELICA-SW20-GT-S-/111021050807 NRG is better quality, but more expensive, and you have to mill it for the turn signal cancellation to work. http://www.amazon.com/NRG-I...

The seven rib blocks on the small port 4AGE's also have an oil return pipe on the right-rear from the back of the head. The 4AGZE's & 20v's have the 'bump' in the block for that hole, but it's solid cast metal there instead. http://www.billzilla.org/4agstock2.htm ... third link in a google sear...

Re: AE86 insurance help. Total loss situation.

I am not sure about Tennessee, but in Texas the insurance company only has to pay "market value" for the car ... which comes from an "independent" group of insurance agencies. Essentially you will never get the replacement value of your car in Texas unless you specifically have r...

I thought it wasn't lowered but cut? Because from the looks of what jsp does, I thought cutting was the only big item? Any feedback on how it drives even though the suspension geometry isn't original? I ask because I was intrigued by the f20 swap but now...? You have to do both. The sub frame is lo...

Re: I am entirely new to imports need advice.

How about an frs drivetrain swap has that been done yet? The frame rails on the AE86 are a few inches to narrow for the FR-S/BRZ motor. You could make it work if you wanted to tube the front of the car, but I would only consider that for a car with light frame damage up front. What's not perfect ab...

There are those fun little metal bands around the bead seat are too. I have had to cut what was left of tires that blew out before. Not fun even when you can get at it easily.

Re: Help buying an AE86!

Yes you are right about the rust, now that I think about it that's my biggest concern. I'm worried that the owner is trying to cover up the rust, how can I check for this? First thing to look for is if there is fresh paint, or newer than stock paint in any of the areas you are concerned with. If it...

Re: Help buying an AE86!

You should be very concerned about rust in the places I mentioned. The worst places for it to get are #2,3,5. Mechanically it is like any other car. If you are concerned about it, and do not know how to check it, or do not have the tools, just bring it to a reputable mechanic. They will charge you $...

Re: Help buying an AE86!

Toyota's were a lot better than Honda's, but all cars rust when you put them in the salt. The most common places that I have seen for rust other than exterior are: 1) Under the battery tray in the engine compartment. 2) Under the CMC/MC/Brake Booster in the engine compartment. 3) Under the carpet be...

Did it change from a hatch to a coupe? LOL!!!! What's wrong with the floor mounted pedal set? You can search the junk yards for a Tercel or any number of other Toyotas with manual racks for the U-Joint, or you can buy one new for about $120.

The sky is pretty much the limit with the F20. The F20 will be way easier to get parts for as well. That being said, if you are going to sell it down the line ... the BEAMS will probably bring more money, and appeal to a larger number of people since it is still "all in the family". For th...
