Re: The 50MPG Beams AE86 Build

LongGrain- Multiple use vehicle. Multiple diffs, different final drives, and different maps. Drift car with 200hp, capable of getting 50MPG. It is definitely possible. I've gotten close to 40MPG out of worse vehicle setups.

Re: The 50MPG Beams AE86 Build

I like the idea of having 6 gears. Also, I've been looking into different rear ends again. I've gotten all settled in at the new job and new house in Detroit, I forget how many things have to be purchased when moving. I've been comparing between a modified 8.8 rear end, and a volvo 240 rear end. The...

The more you know... Lol. That answers that.

The only FD cars I have seen the rear end setups on is Taka's 86 (Celica supra rear end) and Brandon Wicknick's S13.

Re: The 50MPG Beams AE86 Build

I was going to use a Ford 8" and modify it, this is a much better option. I'm curious if it'll take the beating from drifting.

Re: The 50MPG Beams AE86 Build

Woah. I had never thought of a quick change diff. Now the question is, how much is it going to cost to put a winters quick change in my 86? That is perfect. It takes all of the math and speculation out of the equation, and gives me something to have data to back up my math and speculation lol. Gotta...

I guess what I meant initially is that changing the current aerodynamics doesn't play as much of a role.

Re: The 50MPG Beams AE86 Build

Don't get me wrong, aerodynamics are important. But, the drag coefficient of the ae86 is decent enough to get good fuel economy, and I am doing a few things like a 1 piece under tray.

Re: The 50MPG Beams AE86 Build

Riddleyo- you can't get 50mpg out of a car and engine rates for 30mpg, no matter how you drive. First you build it to be able to sip on fuel and not chug it. Then you worry about keeping your foot out of it. Aero doesn't play as much of a role, since I'm not designing an entirely new vehicle. I'll g...

Yoshi, not currently. Myth Busters did a similar thing with an f150. I'm hoping that I will be able to achieve my fuel economy goals without major aerodynamic changes. I don't remember the details of the episode to comment on that but mythbusters is about as closely related to science as a Planet o...

Re: The 50MPG Beams AE86 Build

Correct. A late opening intake valve and a late closing exhaust valve. A little bit of exhaust gasses get sucked back into the intake and combustion chamber to lean it out. The 1zz used it a little bit, but engines like the 1nz (or variant of) used in the Prius are built around it. It's super cool....

Re: The 50MPG Beams AE86 Build

I'm aware of the other J160s :) I would rather change the rear end than the 6th gear, but I do have all the gear ratios of the other J160s saved. 1) I will look into that. Leen stuff is spendy, but it would be nice to not have to cut up the interior. 2) this engine doesn't have EGR. 3) belly pan was...

Pretty much I've been an armchair mechanic/fabricator for the past 3 months while I figur...

WTB: zenki GTS underdash and front lighting harness

I am looking for a GOOD CONDITION Zenki (early model) under dash and front lighting harness, or at least what you would want for them. I'm considering using a painless wiring harness, but they're around $200-400 for just an underdash harness (universal), and it would be nice to not have to build a h...

I have thought about it, but I feel that the patina fits the car. The frame is most likely not straight, the trunk shows signs of a pretty serious rear end accident. It's not meant to be a show car. This is essentially, a drift missile. I will hit cones, barriers, walls and cars with it. When I wrec...

My 86 saved my life.

No I didn't get into a car accident where my 86 would have saved me from certain death. No, I was not placed in a situation where my finely tuned, 80s sporty econobox allowed me to out-maneuver a sudden obstruction in traffic caused by a natural disaster and terrible drivers. Hell, my 86 doesn't eve...
