Re: Freshly Rebuilt 20V Silvertop

Are you using the OEM oil cooler plate? There are two different types from what I understand, one of which angles the oil filter towards the front of the engine (timing belt side) a little bit. I believe it's the plate found on the MR2 and AE86. I think the AE92 GT-S is a flat plate. At least on my ...

Re: Random 4age stuff

if you happen to have a reference image so I know what I'm looking for, I might be able to find it in my pile of spare parts This is the best I can do, I'm not sure if this is what the part actually looks like. The part that goes to the block should fit under the AC compressor bracket. https://i.po...

Do you have the bracket that goes from the MR2 exhaust manifold to the block? Should be an L shaped piece.

Re: 7AG Block, Is there a best?

About the 7A blocks, I swear I saw that there were two different blocks. There is one with less support material near the bottom. I'll dig through my pics and see what I find. Edit: I found the pics I had. Apologies to whoever they belong to as I have no idea anymore. Unfortunately I don't have any ...

Whatever you do, don't do this:

I'm sorry I derailed the topic with this, but I guess we all learn something new every day. And I always love to see your work! OK, here are some better pics. I had pulled all of the timing covers for my (someday, someday, someday) engine build, along with that small "cam bracket." https:/...

Re: OST-056: Nasty.....

I've yet to see a Toyota application that uses that mount........... There's a small bracket that bolts to that part of the head. At least for the AE92 GTS. There's a hole in the top timing belt cover for it to stick out of. Then there's a plate which mounts from that bracket to the top of the alte...

Btw, here is a photo showing the difference between a 1st gen TVIS head, and a 2nd gen TVIS head. A first gen is what came on the AE86, the 2nd gen is later http://ost.ebeans.ch/albums/userpics/10005/4AGE_TVIS_heads_early_late_annoted.jpg I have to wonder if Toyota had the MR / FWD mounting in mind...

The old school ;) way of adjusting, making a new hole for the knock pin (whatever it's called) in the cam gear. Then add a new timing mark on the side of the tooth?

Re: Oil port?

Some blocks have just a plug in that drain port, and some (AW11 for one) have a fancy draincock that you can attach a small hose to help keep the coolant from spilling all over.

Where will the head oil drain be plumbed into? There isn't an extra drain on this head. The 2 pipes at the back are for the coolant in, and out for the heater. Whoops :? I'm not used to seeing the RWD coolant piping. The one line looks like the smallport or the "aftermarket" drain you som...

Deck plate necessary?

I was talking to a machine shop recently about another engine I need to get rebuilt, and he mentioned a deck plate, something I've heard of before (though not for that particular engine). There's mention of deck plates in this article: http://club4ag.com/faq_and_tech_pages/4A-GE%20Engine%20Block.htm...

Hopefully not too off-topic... but how many other A family engine accessory brackets will line up using 4A-GE accessories? I think in the 4A-GE family, the RWD is incompatible with FWD? On a topic-related note, the AE92 GT-S also has the power steering pump mounted near the dizzy on the exhaust side...

Thanks for the info about the VC colors. I was hoping to "restore" a set for a wall display I want to do in my house, and was hoping that I could get the correct or "close enough!" main color at a powder coater. I'll probably have more trouble trying to match that early 16v blue ...

Doesn't the FX16 come with a C series FWD trans? What about a Blacktop 6 speed? I don't know anything about the C series, like the gearing for that 6 speed. Just throwing that out there.

I've always thought of the valve covers being a sort of champagne silver. A slight gold tone to the silver. At least based on the few OEM painted VCs I have.

I see 1-3 rod caps have been shaved a bit, and the 1 & 4 thinner counterweights have new holes. Everything is so clean, it's hard to tell which of the larger counterweights has new balancing. Is that an optical illusion, or are those domes coated? I guess it's the rougher surface not reflecting ...

Ceramic coating? If so, that should help the block shed heat. I made the mistake of bringing a block to a local machine shop just for cleaning & inspection to make sure it was usable. I asked for it to be cleaned, and checked, but not painted... and got it back painted black. I wouldn't have min...

13103-16030 are the 10:1 oversize cast pistons with 18mm wrist pin (Singapore & some Euro market). This was just posted in OST's most recent engine rebuild & head porting topic. There is no Toyota 4A-GE 10.3:1 piston with 18mm wrist pin. I guess 10:1 would be "high enough" ;)

Are those stock rods with press-fit 18mm wrist pins? I can't remember if those 10:1 pistons had 18mm or 20mm pins.
