Re: New Annex Coilovers or...Old faithful TRD Blues etc..

For NZ, would welding on the OEM spindles onto the coilover with an adapter be acceptable...? That is a permitted technique providing there is some specified amount of the original strut tube remaining.. I think the regs require 60mm out of the stub casting. The new strut is slipped over the OEM tu...

Re: New Annex Coilovers or...Old faithful TRD Blues etc..

Koni yellows are great too, however the basic shock design is getting a little old as they haven't been updated for our chassis / similar old chassis for decades. They do have good bump compliance, and the adjustments change the shocks as you would expect. Back in 1985 when the AE86 was in producti...

Re: New Annex Coilovers or...Old faithful TRD Blues etc..

Do you guys think we need to or should reinforce that rear shock tower of the chassis? There is no straight answer to that question as you can guess from what has been written in this thread. Many people have installed coilover rear suspension without reinforcing anything and had zero problems. But...

Re: New Annex Coilovers or...Old faithful TRD Blues etc..

I think that the really expensive dampers have gone a long way beyond just controlling what the spring does when it wants to release energy after being compressed, they are now an energy absorbing device in their own right and probably for once, justifiably called 'shock absorbers' with fewer compr...

Re: New Annex Coilovers or...Old faithful TRD Blues etc..

Interesting. Cars like that must have a lot more droop travel than standard, and I guess that the shock is used to add high speed compression damping to help the springs deal with the big hits. This is some of what goes on inside dirtbike forks which have to deal with the same impacts... http://pulp...

totta this one is for you :) I'm going a bit off topic here, but still relevant I hope. Going back a ways... say about 15 years ago, rally cars had quite tall ride heights and soft springs. Looking at modern rally cars, I see low ride heights and what appear to be stiff springs. The ride height is s...

I'm not schooled up on USDM cars... but I'm pretty sure that there are two water temp sensors on the water neck that comes from the head to the radiator. A single wire sensor for the dash gauge and a two wire sensor (green) for the ECU. There could be more but someone else will need to clarify that....

Re: 1985 gt-s poor acceleration

Was the timing belt loose/slack when you checked ? If the belt is going to jump teeth it will be more likely to do that on the crank sprocket. And if that is the case the marks on the cam sprockets can look good but the mark on the crank pulley will be out. Anyway, you are going to have to pull the ...

Re: 4age and wet or cold weather

Based on the fact that you only have a problem in cold/wet weather, and that heating the engine got it going again, I think that for sure moisture is messing with your electrics. So how does it do that ?? Water is a pretty good conductor of electricity, and a thin film of water on the outside of a c...

Toyota often use the same component under different part numbers on several models. I see this particular TPS is also suited to certain Lexus cars as well as AW11 and Corollas. It is a key component in your car driving well, so it needs to be a quality item. And the dealership network has to keep in...

This is a question that I'm sure many people have asked themselves. AFAIK both those sensors have carbon ribbon potentiometers with a copper or brass wiper. They probably got a bit of moisture inside from sitting outside so long. I never tried this, but if you can open them up a spray with Electroclean (contact cleaner) might help. EDIT : Just pulled a TPS apart and...

You should be able to do a quick cam timing check by pulling the top timing belt cover. Turn the engine by hand until #1 cylinder is at TDC on the compression stroke. Line the dimples on the cam pulleys with the marks on the backing plate. Then look to see where the notch on the rim of the crank pul...

As far as I know setting the timing on the 4AGZE is pretty much the same as on any 16V 4AGE. Took a while, but I finally got the COP wiring completed. I don't like having a lot of unnecessary joins in important wires, so I bought some new DIY kits for the coil clips. You have to assemble the clips and crimp the tiny pins onto the end of the wires. Bought an AMP-TYCO crimping tool from China...

Re: 1985 GT-S Resurrected from the dead

The starter solenoid on the AE86 gets 12V directly from the keyswitch. The wiring diagram for the 1985 does not show a clutch switch, but if you see one under the dash there should also be a "starter relay" somewhere. This relay only allows 12V from the keyswitch to reach the starter solen...

In order of length, the leads (OEM) test at 9.33, 8.52, 6.54 and 4.02 kOhms. This
is within the 1000 Ohms/inch of length guideline and so I call the leads good.

Now to figure out a way to test the voltage to the coil with the engine running ?

Yeah, I was surprised that the GZE coils couldn't keep up with my modest tune. Discovered a valid reason for changing to COP's. I have been experiencing some "spark blowing out" misfiring at WOT and high rpm's with the GZE coilpacks that I have been using. After doing a bit of research I find that pencil coils are claimed to have a stronger spark, so I bought some us...
