Re: My red hatch (fix-up and restoration)
I have another quick update on the engine build. Basically I'm waiting on rods from Molnar rods before I can put everything back together, and I don't have an ETA for those parts yet... Over the summer I had the bigport head cleaned and ported by oldskewltoy! ( check out his thread here ): https://i...

Re: My red hatch (fix-up and restoration)
Quick update on my engine rebuild. I finally received all the parts I needed! https://i.imgur.com/MplITuA.jpg?1 Some other gaskets and stuff aren't in the picture, but these are all the important parts. :) In other news I swapped my steering wheel for a JDM one. I've always thought they look way bet...

Re: My red hatch (fix-up and restoration)
Keep it up with the posts. It is pretty quiet here these days. I recently pulled my AE86 out for an inspection after a decade of it sitting in the barn. I am unsure if I want to start the journey on the car or simply sell it as-is.. It sure is quiet, but I'll keep updating this thread even if I'm t...

Re: 4A-GE bigport rebuild questions
Here's my "budget build" redtop bottom with bluetop rotating assembly, ported and polished big port head, ceramic coated the stock bluetop piston, gze cams and thats about it. Running t3/t4 turbo, boosted to 15 psi on E85. For fuel & ign, stock ecu, decapped scion tc injectors to 750c...

Re: 4A-GE bigport rebuild questions
All depends on what you are looking to get out of this engine. The PonCams are good for sure, but I've kicked down on my cams for a more "friendly" in town drive-a-bility. Seems everybody wants to scream their engine everywhere they go. Haha, yea I'm definitely not planning on redlining i...

Re: 4A-GE bigport rebuild questions
Thanks for all the guidance everyone. I am planning on having OST clean up the bigport head, so maybe I'll see if he can hook me up with any additional parts. :) If you already have the PonCams, go with those, if not look for a set of cams with 10* less duration and as much lift as possible to work ...

Re: 4A-GE bigport rebuild questions
when u see a $47 oem gze piston and a replacemnet DSM piston @ $90 per set !!! dyno 550+hp ...... noisy expensive forged pistons are a complete waste of money to me.... especially for a weak 100hp build these blocks wear well. Was there a ridge ? browse the net for similar bigport builds. You shoul...

Re: 4A-GE bigport rebuild questions
The block is being checked out right now at the machine shop, but the cylinders looked to be in good shape when I disassembled it. That said most research I've read says if you try to reuse 81mm stock bore pistons/rings, the risk of blow-by is pretty high, so going a tiny bit oversized and using 81....

Re: 4A-GE bigport rebuild questions
Thanks for the reply. Yea I'm thinking if the stock rods and crankshaft check out OK at the machine shop, then I'll continue to use those with new pistons and 18mm pins. I'm not going over the stock redline, so it should be okay? Most aftermarket brands like Toda have options for 18mm or 20mm pins. ...

4A-GE bigport rebuild questions
I am currently doing my first real rebuild of a 4A-GE, and have some questions due to the many options available for engine internals. What I'm starting with: ⋅ 3-rib 4A block ⋅ Stock bigport head ⋅ Upgraded 20v oil pump, OEM water pump, all gaskets, etc ⋅ ...

It's been a long time since my last update... obviously much has changed for everyone since 2019. My car is still running strong, but this winter I decided to finally start rebuilding the spare engine I have. https://i.imgur.com/7cvX681.jpg I'm fairly certain it has never been rebuilt, so it's a dec...

Anyone ever restore GT-S seats?
I have some USDM GT-S seats which are in pretty good condition, but the hard plastic seam between the vinyl back and cloth front is coming apart in places, and the cloth could use from refreshing. Have any of you restored these seats in the past or had a shop do it? What was your experience? Picture...

Re: AC compressor clutch
Have you looked for a 1987 or a 1988 Chevy Nova. The A/C units are the same as the Toyota ones. That is (if) your car is a FX16 GTS!!! I have not, I wish I knew a better resource to cross-reference parts and figure out what other cars share them. I'm not 100% sure what model my A/C system is from, ...

Any idea how many miles is on the A/C pulley/clutch? If you don't feel like taking the clutch off then I could take the whole compressor assembly, but either way I would be interested. Let me know in 2 weeks!

AC compressor clutch
If anyone has a spare A/C compressor or just the clutch from it laying around, please let me know! Even if the compressor is broken, the clutch might still be good. You can test it by applying 12v to the wire coming off of it and seeing if the clutch engages/disengages. Anyway, my clutch failed part...

Re: My red hatch (fix-up and restoration)
Sorry this took forever, but I finally uploaded a clip of the exhaust comparison. The phone has some trouble picking up the lower sound of the HKS, but the improved note is obvious. I was going to record a drive-by too, but didn't get to it yet. The sound is amazing and I am glad I picked the Hi-Pow...

I think I might have answered my own question. I finally decided to replace the old crusty exhaust with an HKS Hi-Power catback, but I noticed something strange when checking the fit. https://i.imgur.com/izLS6Zj.jpg It looks like I am missi...

The car is meant to have fun in, not garage keep it and wax it every time a dirt spec gets on it. Life is short, and these are toys to play with, so have fun with it; if not let someone else play with it. These cars arent SUPERCARS or some sort of limited edition collector car. Re: Extinction Of The AE86
I know exactly how you feel. I am honestly surprised people are still trying to use the AE86 as a tuner car. The days of buying Grandma's $500 AE86 are long gone, and parts are becoming very expensive and hard to find. Even though my AE86 may not be 100% original, I feel I am trying my best to keep ...

Re: A/c system from an sr5 work with a 4age 16v?
The main differences are the clutch pulley, and the wiring harness (which is a pretty large difference). The A/C computer board inside the A/C evaporator unit is different, the harness that plugs into the evaporator and into the under-dash harness is different (the 4A-GE wiring has some extra relays...
