87 Coupe w/ CA18det

Postby boosted86 » Thu Feb 28, 2013 9:05 am

Whats up everybody, heres my 87 coupe that Ive had for a couple years, my old build thread disappeared when C4ag went down, so heres its current state of affairs.
I bought her like this
Image

Made it look like this for a bit
Image
Image
Then stripped her down for big turbo plans and a new wiring harness.

Image
Image

But those fell thru after I ran into brake clearance with that turbo setup,so I got rid of all thhat and got the motor reinstalled with new mounts.
Image
Image
Image

Now I need to find a turbo and I can get started on a downpipe. Its looking like I'll be able to use the stock manifold so if it fits Ill be working on the wiring harness before long.
Also need to find bushings for the lower control arms, if anyone knows where to get Whiteline in the US, let me know!

Nice to see another "outside the box" Nissan heart in an 86!! How is the ca18?? I wanted one back when I had my first s13 about 9 years ago... Never had the opportunity to get one tho.

Its pretty sick! Its got plenty of pep to get the 86 moving quick and it revs high which is way more fun. I cant wait to get it rolling again this year!

Thought Id update this thing. A few months back got ahold of another coupe, this time an '85 Zenki...It was a short lived affair though after a bad night...
Image
'
which turned into...

Image
Image

Soo I stripped the silver car and have been transplanting all the suspension pieces to the Ca18 car and will be ordering a turbo this week hopefully since my stock nissan is blown and the CT26 is a bit laggy for my tastes on this car.
Got the rearend all cleaned up and painted together the other day
Image
Image
Image

Currently need to finish the wiring harness, order turbo and buuild a downpipe, then time for paint

Its been awhile, been waiting on new toys so I can finish this guy
Got a turbo and got the motor fairly well ready, minus deleting the butterflies Ive yet to do.
Built a bumper bash bar the other day, next up is tube front and finally a cage so I can get paint laid down and the motor in

Finally got this on the road over the weekend, finished the wiring last week or two, put a new axle in and some other bits

Still need an 02 sensor as this one the plug broke apart, and it seems theres a small vacuum leak, have to smoke test it this week. Next up is exhaust and paint, and I should hopefully be running end of this month!

Finally got the fiasco of getting this registered over with. Got a pan hard bar ordered and an alignment setup for next week. Spent all Friday night putting it down in primer to get it ready for a rat rod show local that happened today.

Went for a little cruise Thursday after installing a fresh alternator
Image

Image

Saturday got her put back together

Image

Image

I didn't spend enough time mixing the can of primer, and different batches is the reason for then fenders and hood being glossy and the rest flat. Color has been decided upon for the next season though

Got about 15 minutes into a cruise, and oil gauge dropped to zero suddenly. Pulled over and found the block adapter for the oil sender had broke clean off :/
So parts are ordered and a brace will be made to support the sender, hopefully can get it to the track this weekend!

The toys loitering as usual

Image

And some sound clips for good measure
Image

Image

Parked next to my buddies civic that's in for quarter panel replacement and turboo!

Fixing the oil sender turned into a drop the subframe, drill and tap the block and redo the front end gig, but got that finished up last Friday and got an aligment Saturday. Been cruising around, car runs great, bit rich still gonna get a safc2 and wideband soon.

Will have better pictures soon but here's some from cruising the other night

Been awhile, figured I'd update this.

Had the black coupe done for a few months, enjoyed it every day. Took it too a local drift event and met an unfortunate end.

Hit a bump in the track, washed out front end grip and mollywhopped a k rail.
Image
Image
Pushed the drivers strut tower out about 3/8 inch back and upwards.. learned my lesson on building a tough ass bash bar with no crush points.
Being as the car had been frame pulled before I ever got it, im wary about dumping the cash to pull it and rebuild the front end.

Did tubs and some other work to 2 240s after I moved into my new house!
Image
Image
Image
Image

So I picked up this car earlier thiss year.
Image
Image
Image

Had a 3tc in it, had bad rings in 2 cylinders. And the whole csr was pretty much in need of a rebuild.. bought it a fun car for the year and ended up being a totally new project.
Found out it had tons more rust than I had anticipated, and was up in the air about fixing it or cutting the front end off and replacing it onto my old black coupe. Just couldn't talk myself into it so Ive been cutting and replacing panels the last few weeks and will eventually get the chassis back to a presentable drivable form!
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

I rebuilt the 3tc and sold it to a friend for his 86 hatch, and picked up another ca18det with cams, turbo, nistune, forged internals and some other goodies for a deal.
Image

It's already tore down to get the pistons ceramic coated and a frssh gasket set along with paint.
Hoping to have it ready for next sEason, got alot of long nights ahead.
Talking with stance and tf works to get true rear coilovers going for the 86 chassis, hope that comes thru!

What are the gold wheels you have in the third pic at the beginning of this build thread? 14x8? Love how they look. Nice build, something you dont see everyday.

Finally got back to working on this pig.

Decided to go ls motor.
Image
Image

Just kidding.
Got equal length 4 link boxes installed
Image
Image

New Stance coilovers
Image
Image
Image
New shock towers welded in, started setting up the tubs.

Image

And let it see some sun for the first time in awhile.
Image
Image

Got quite a few patches still to make, start sealing up the flinstone feature it currently has. Then I'll move onto setting up the engine bay/tranny tunnel for the ca18det to go back into it.

Dont know why all the pictures are sideways, can't be arsed to fix it on my phone.
More updates soon.

What's the scoop on the inverted stance rear coilovers? Custom request?

Inverted shocks is standard on most stance coilovers I believe now
Image

Got a bit done recently, been slow as money is tight and its been hot and humid in the garage. Recently put in a window unit so expect more updates soon, as I should be fitting tbe cage in the next month!

Image
Passenger side is done as well, guess I forgot to take a picture.

Built a new front bar setup as the oem was smashed underneath
Image
Image

Built a rear bash bar to get away from sheet metal for a night.
Image
Image
Wheels should fit spot on, and rear will be getting overfenders.

Thanks for the interest ill post more updates soon

Looks great dude I wish I could fab like that. Any plans for a watts link? Imo a shame not to considering your skills and equal 4 link.

Stabce doesn't list inverted rear for ae86 unless I missed it (checked site yesterday), but it's probably just out of date.

The only thing I don't like about inverted strut inserts is they're prone to clunking. The shock cartridge and strut tube need to be cleaned/regreased periodically because of it.

Thanks! As for the watts link ive considered it , but for now I think a 5 link setup will be plenty fine for slide duty, but I'm always open to try a new setup if this feels lacking.

Hm odd about stance, they were pretty quiet about releasing true rears. If you email them they've been quick to respond, and the guys at frsport have been real helpful also.
I'll keep an eye on that, haven't heard too many complaints on it.

This vid explains the clunking and how to remedy:

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=X0hr8s5Of4Y

I've got ae86 stock replacement Bilsteins (inverted insert up front) and they've always clunked; it only happens at really low speeds over bumps/irregularities. Luckily, it doesn't affect performance unless the sticktion gets bad enough over time. It's more of an annoyance than anything else.

Been plugging away at the roll cage the last week or so, got the front hAlf tacked in place, just have to finish rear half, door bars then main hoop diagonal and harness bar.
Then finally finish the last of small patches and lay some paint inside and get moving on other bits!

Don't know why photobucket keeps rotating pictures, and every time I try to change it, the app or site crashes. I'll probably switch hosts next update
