LEEN J160 6 speed for rwd "A" powered cars.

Postby oldeskewltoy » Wed Jan 16, 2013 3:17 pm

You didn't break another T50 did you?

Image

One of the most common short comings with the AE86... and in fact ANY rear wheel drive car utilizing any of Toyota's "A" engine series... is the original T50 - the gear spacing SUCKS, they are weak (arguable), and most are well worn out. Rebuilds are costly, parts not always easy to acquire, and when you are finished you still have a T50... weak, with poor gear spacing.

So how about an upgrade...

Image

The LEEN adapter allows the user to adapt Toyota's J160 6 speed to bolt directly on to the T50 bellhousing.

Image

This means for more than 99% of "A" engine powered cars this could be the last transmission you'll ever need. Why do I exclude 1%? Because less then 1% of ALL "A" engines have ever made enough torque... not horsepower mind you... but TORQUE to break the J160. The J160 is EASILY capable of supporting over 200#/ft of torque in a 2800# car! That is more than double the original 4AGE torque... in a car weighing 400#s more then a fully loaded AE86

Ok... so you want to know more.... Currently there are 3 options: 1) a minimal kit[€1292], 2) complete kit[€1815], 3) fully assembled including a USED J160 transmission - BOLT-IN READY[price dependent on transmission cost]

Pricing is in Euros... this is because the manufacturer is in Ireland. To find out how much it costs on any given day use a currency converter. Freight is additional.

Here is a view of 2 minimal kits (throwout bearing sleeve is optional)

Image

The minimal kit consists of: main adapter, seal plate, input shaft bearing extension, 2 bearings, and a properly splined clutch disc that fits inside a stock, or stock fitting replacement pressure plate, and flywheel.

The complete kit comes with everything from the minimal kit, a very NIFTY shifter replacement assembly*, the steel throwout bearing sleeve, as well as a crossmember.

Image

And the finished assembly.... (thanks Tony ;) ) note the shifter relocation

Image

This is the unit I installed in my car........ note I retained the original shifter assembly

Image

If you choose to just use the minimal kit you will need to do a bit of surgery on the tunnel, but it does fit with only minor cutting required... and the shifter is just about perfectly located once moved....

in my car (white AE71) I had the front half of the driveshaft shortened by 3/8". I would recommend that you measure for your specific application BEFORE you cut.

Here is how I measured....

Image

With both transmissions sitting on their respective 4A/T50 bell housings, I slipped each yoke into each respective transmission

Image
(top yoke/half driveshaft is from Mark II Supra (1982-1985) - yoke is the same as J160)

I then inserted each yoke into each transmission... found the J160 to be 3/8" longer @ the flange... and so had the shaft shortened

finally... with everything installed....

I've just gotten the information directly from LEEN...

BOLT-IN READY - €3150.00 INCLUDING freight from Ireland!!!

That price included: A) all the parts in the kit, B) the cost/and labor to machine the tailhousing to accept the shifter relocation, C) the cost for a good condition, used, J160 transmission, and finally D) the labor cost to assemble the entire unit.... AND SHIPPING!

i know it has been updated that this works with the s15 trans, but has anyone actually mounted this to an ae86? curious as to the shifter position since someone is selling their s15 trans locally.

thanks

LEEN is still doing testing.... but as of now to fit the S15 version - measuring, and some cutting is likely required.

The shifter kit IS available separately, it comes with instructions for your chosen machinist to follow to machine the tailhousing. Since the adapter adds about 3/4" in length, the mount will not line up.

BUT the mount is really easy to fab up. The floor is slightly different in the E7, so I fabbed a mount.

Further developments

We have now CONFIRMED... the S15 6th gear sets(best O/D ratio of all AZ6s)... fits on the J160

We are hoping to swap the S15 6th onto the the RX8 box, if it goes on, that will allow a creeper 1st gear, the middle 4 gears as a close ratio set, and finally, the S15 6th to offer the maximum overdrive... the best of ALL worlds :!:

Also... in its 3rd major development, the adapter itself now fits the Mazda RX8 transmission (and so likely the Miata as well)!!

I remember (vaguely) reading an article on http://www.ft86club.com/ about the shift technition had changed something like 80% of the 6speed to make the short shift feel smooth.

Nope.... There is a BIG advantage to modifying the tunnel this small amount.... The shifter is PERFECTLY placed....

Here is the shifter going through its pattern in relation to the steering wheel. This is in my AE71... but the relative position is the same...

Image

As you can see... the shifter goes from slightly in front, to slightly behind the line of the steering wheel. All within short reach, even 6th gear.

Now the negative or downside to modifying the tunnel... new carpet required. Modification of the console required. Fabrication of a cover plate for the now larger opening. And finally... loss of stealth... the relocated shifter is a dead giveaway :o

So is it 1 universal adapter that fits these different transmissions that are still in testing (J160, RX8, S15) or are there different versions of the product?

Have you done any testing with the S2000 AP1/AP2 AZ6? They are very common here in the North America and are stocked through JDM engine retailers and are quite affordable (can usually be had for 1000-1500 USD). The J160, S15 6 speed, and Miata 6 speed are quite rare.

There is now a single adapter that will fit ALL AZ6 transmissions.

The 1st gen S2000 does NOT use an AZ6, it is some other transmission.

Image

Here is a view showing the Toyota(2nd down), the Mazda(3rd), the Nissan(bottom) and the S2000 is on top. Note the Toyota, Mazda, and Nissan cases all appear to be similar, now compare them to the Honda on top, the entire architecture of the transmission is completely different.

Later S2000 may have a version of the AZ6... but I seriously doubt it because the current version of the AZ6 is fitted to the FRS

The 2nd gen S2000s have the same casing or a very similar casing as 1st gens unfortunately. Multiple sources state the S2000 uses a AZ6 from Aisin, maybe it's a different style one.

I've been looking into this and RX8 6 speeds are plentiful and very cheap. How similar/dissimilar is the RX8 6 speed from the J160?

Is it possible to install the gear lever kit on the RX8 gearbox?

RX8 gearbox seems like the best way to go for the North American market. They are as cheap as $400 USD on ebay buy it now.

Cheers,

Carthik
