Optimum safe igntion advance?

Postby erictharg » Tue Apr 19, 2016 12:44 am

I've built a 16V 4AGE for racing {(in my Westfeild Eleven). It's on carbs and programmable ignition. 11:1 CR, 288 deg, 8.5mm lift cam. Typically what is the max safe advance to run? Not had it on a rolling road yet but want to set it to something safe whilst I bed it in on the road. I'm guessing 28 deg total advance should be about right, running on super unleaded, but would appreciate input from those who know.

In the end it depends on the knock limit and exhaust gas temperatures.

28° should be ok until you get it run in enough to calibrate it properly.

As said above... 28 is safe. I have run my 16V (10.3:1, ITB's, 272 cams EFI) as high
as 35 deg all in at 4000rpm without problems. However, there doesn't seem to be any
more performance to gained by going higher than 32 deg.

Cheers... jondee86

Thanks for the feedback. I'll stick with 28 deg until rolling road on 5 May. Then hopefully first race of the season 7th May.

In the UK. And the Eleven is somewhat different to the Westy 7 type cars! Chassis not too dissimilar to the early live axle cars though. Still manages to be just a shade over 500gk with the 4AGE. I do have a dogcam bullet camera and once I'm happy the new drivetrain is reliable I'll aim to get some footage and post on YouTube. Meanwhile it is feeling very strong on our backroads as I bed it in!

Partially related. Some people here might find some useful info in this article.
