Removing 16v 4ag engine

Postby aaronlee133 » Sun May 24, 2015 5:58 pm

Hey everyone,

I'm in process of pulling my 16v 4ag engine and for those that have already done this I wanted to inquire about the easiest way to go about this based on experience and any tips & 'tricks' learned along the way.

Specifically:

1) With respects to the exhaust manifold, is it better/easier to unbolt down-pipe from exhaust manifold (I believe 3x 14mm bolts) or unbolt from cat and lift manifold and down-pipe all together?

2) It seems its easier to un-bolt tranny when lifting engine VS pulling out engine with tranny attached as this requires a steep angle and high lifting crane. With respects to unbolting, is there any recommendation as best way to unbolt? What e.g., unbolt top screws and then unbolt from bottom? Along these lines, do i need to unbolt the tranny mount and suspend with a jack or is it possible to unbolt tranny and remove the block with tranny mount still on?

Any suggestions or lessons learned with respects to the above would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,
-Aaron

If you can I would leave the headers on when pulling it out... That's just me though
87 GTS Coupe stock and Super Duper Clean
87 GTS Coupe Beams 3sge (under construction cuz I'm slow and lazy and broke-FML)

I take the headers off. and jack the tranny up under the bell housing to tilt it up. attach hoist, rock it a bit, pops right out.

Tranny angle makes it easier to reinstall.

I recommend removing the hood and radiator to make everything easier.

1- Exhaust, if your down-pipe bolts aren't rusted to hell unbolt that. (Where header separates into 2 peices) Otherwise keep the header in 1 piece attached to the car and unbolted from the head.

2- Keep engine and tranny in 1 piece. Unbolt shifter from inside. Remove transmission cross-member. Pull Drive shaft. Unbolt engine mounts.
-When using the cherry picker, adjust your chain so that the drive-shaft side of the transmission is pointing towards the ground. (You are trying to pull the whole engine/ tranny package out at an angle)
Have someone under the car pushing down on the end of the tranny as you lift out so that you don't scratch your firewall.

In my images i only had a small chain on one hook. get a full chain attached to both hooks and attach a couple of clicks towards the front.

Good luck 4ag swaps are fun!

Here's another time i had to pull the 4ag (Spun bearing :? )

If you mod your hood to open up all the way, It leaves plenty of clearance.

Ive never seen two people get so dirty pulling out a very clean engine. lol

Thanks for the write up though!

Side note, should I have a topless manchild present when I take out my 16v?

Empty the gear oil from the transmission and pull the engine and trans out together as shown. It helps a LOT if you have a load leveler on your engine hoist. When you install the engine, you need to swing it all the way to the left side to get it to go past the radiator support. It's pretty easy, really.
