Hi guys,

I have issue with my flip headlights.. Hoping someone could help me out

My headlight would flip open when it should be closed and when it should be open it would close and the beams are on basically pointing to the ground. I tried to reset it with the clockwise turn of the motor but It goes back to the same thing every single time.

I already checked the relays by the battery and under dash. Relays are good.
I already checked the fuses under hood and drivers kick panel. Fuses are good.
Motors are good as well because they do retract.

The only thing I havent check is the switch. What are the likely hood that it is?

Please help me if you have input or have had similar situation.. Thank you!!

You have to take off the little arm that connects the motor to the headlight assembly then set it correctly. It may take a few times to get it right but that is the only I have found to be successful. I had the same issue a while ago and adjusting the turn wheel on the motor did nothing to correct it.

Thank you!! I ll try that tomorrow..I didnt think about that.. I ll let you know....

Do you set it while the light switch is closed position or open position?

What I do is...

Flip the lights switch on then unplug the battery.
Remove that connecting arm and position the headlights so that they are at the ideal up position then tighten it back up.
Plug battery back in and turn off the headlight switch.
Might need to do some minor adjustments to get them to your exact preference.

Good luck!

I tried it today.

I have issue because the lights open when its supposed to be closed. So total opposite.
I cant shorten it enough to have it closed because the motor arm location is at the shortest point. I am so confused..

Thanks for the pointer..

wouldn't you do the same thing? I think the point is to have the switch on, battery unplugged, with the lights in the fullly opened position.

so you would turn on the switch, it would turn on the lights but close the lids.
then unplug the battery.
Then turn the knobs and set the rod to the proper position so the lids are up.
Then, when you connect the battery, the lights come on and the lids stay up.
then when you turn off the switch, the lights go off, and then the lids close.

I've actually not had issues with any of my lights as of yet, but I *think* that should work.

Unless maybe the wires to the motors are somehow switched around (polarity) somehow?

I gave up for now. I couldnt do it.

When light is supposed closed..the arm of the motor is at its closest position to the headlight and the arm adjustment cant be shorten enough because adjustment on the rod is already maxed out.

Do you guys know what was mention above? Could polarity be switched? Anyone has experienced it? Or anyone has had the switch go bad? Thank you for all who tried to help. I haven't succeeded but I appreciate you all..

Auckword1 is saying to adjust the motor crank arm. Loosen the nut, the arm is on a spline so rotate until in the correct position and tighten up the nut again.
Is this something that just happened or a problem since you bought the car?

Here's a picture of a motor but I'm not sure of the correct crank arm position

Thank you so much for all who helped me. This absolutely works. So for anyone who has issue with adjustment of the flip headlight on AE86..yes those adjustment knobs won't do the job. Adjusting the motor arms is the answer. I can't thank you enough for this insight. I have been struggling with this for about 8 months. It finally works!! :D
