AE86 starter motor options

Postby IndiaDorifto7 » Mon Dec 12, 2016 4:11 pm

The time has come to replace my starter and I'm looking at some different options. I'll probably get a new aftermarket starter but I hear mixed results on different options. Mainly I'm looking through Rock Auto. What starters would you recommend? The car I have is a '86 GTS, T50 trans, stock 4AGE

I think the only other bolt on option worth considering is the Planatary gear reduction type 0.8kw starter, 2.85kg: P/N 28100-15190 for a AE92.
This is the type with the long through bolts. It does not look like a reduction starter at first, but it has planatary gears inside. It came on some AE92s with 4A-GE. Its main advantage is that it is very light.

Straight bolt-in job with no mods required. Reduction starter sounds tough too :)

Thanks jondee86! I think I'll just go with a standard AE86 starter for now. Should be enough for my needs :)

If you want to go outside OEM 86 starters, I'd just get this:

And then get a nice Accord starter. That way parts will be easier to come by in the future.

Although rebuilding a starter is quite easy.

Here is a good and easy write-up for refreshing the contacts:

Also want to clean the starter wire contact points and after that I would put a light coat of di-electric grease.

Planetary reduction is amazing.

I've got a '96 F250 with the 7.3L diesel. it was slightly slow turning over, and found that the 2003 superduty starter bolted in, and was a planetary reduction starter. Rockauto had one brand new for 80 bucks. KILLER deal. after that starter was put in, the engine turns over SO much faster.

it was at least five pounds lighter, and about half the size. I do not know if that difference will scale to the starter on a 4AGE, since they're already pretty tiny.
