Hello,
I was wondering if anyone has ever looked into swapping from a traditional belt AC compressor to an Electrical AC compressor. Recently been thinking about putting AC back in the car, but honestly didn't want to go through all the pain of the belt based compressor mainly due to having a BT 20v and not even sure how I would re-run all the hoses for idle.
So this is a very generic question not AE86 specific, but would love to know what others think about this? I searched the web and there does seem to be some options, maybe others have seen on the web someone else doing this before or know someone who might be able to provide some feedback whom attempted this already.

looks very interesting..... What is their performance like? For example sitting in LA traffic @ 95 degrees, and 90% humidity??

This would be really fun to try and get to work, but seems really pricey to put the system together. I'm assuming you'd need a controller similar to the dakota digital ones:

which puts you at almost if not over 2 Gs and then fittings lines and the rest of the big picture pieces such as condenser, etc..
I think if I finished the car and was looking for the next big upgrade this would be the project to try. I hope you try it!

Sent them an email just now!
1.) If you had to guess what alternator should I think to upgrade too, currently have stock 20v BT
2.) Will this effect the idle up/down? Seem since its not belt driven at idle I wont have to worry about this?

The interwebz tell me that the AE111 alternator is rated at 70 amps. If you are
adding 30 amps worth of electrical load, in theory you should be upgrading your
alternator to a 100 amp unit. For sure do a bit of research to see what options
you have for upgrading... maybe the alternator from a 6 or 8 cylinder Toyota
might fit ?
There is no free lunch ? You have replaced a mechanical load with an electrical
load, but the engine still has to drive the alternator that much harder when the
compressor motor kicks in. That will pull your idle down, and if your car has a
A/C idle-up solenoid valve somewhere, you will still need that.
