Postby josephriveraSD » Sat Dec 05, 2015 12:38 am

Hi guys, im new to the Club4ag group and im kind of new to ae86's.

I have a 85 GTS Coupe. But my differential started knocking all of a sudden and im unsure what it is. It is welded, and i have tried flushing and replacing the rear end fluid and that didnt change anything..

Super vague description. Give us more. Accel? Decel? Cruise? When turning? Type of noise? Speed of noise? Faster noises are generally pinion-related, lower, more rumbly noises are carrier bearings.

When you drained the diff did you find a lot of metal chunks in the pan ?

Couple of possibilities... if the noise started real sudden as in one minute no
noise and next minute clunking bad, then something broke. And when something
breaks there is usually some metal in the pan.

If the pan had only the usual iron filing and no chunks, and the noise kind of
sneaked up on you gradually, then it might be worth getting under the car and
checking that it is not the driveshaft making a noise. Make sure the universals
are not loose. Then grab a hold of the driveshaft by the hanger bearing, and see
if the rubber mounting is gone. There should be a little bit of movement when
you push-pull on the driveshaft, but if it flops around or you can get it to clunk
when you give it a good push... replace the hanger bearing.

Cheers... jondee86

Check that your drive shaft bolts are tight, your welded diff could
have broke to make sure ,jack up your rear end and spin the tires
both tires should move in the same direction, if they
moved in opposite direction weld broke.
Also check rear calipers bolts make sure that not loose and moving around.

If everything is nice and tight under the car, and still getting clunk noise
Most likely be Ring & Pinion ,or crush sleeve on the pinion

If you have adjustable rear links also check that that a jam nut didn't come loose.
