LSD option for Autocross

Postby Bakemono858 » Sun Feb 03, 2013 2:22 pm

My current OEM LSD that's installed in my 86 is blown and looking into options. I can either do a rebuild for about $450~ or just save up for a new aftermarket. Getting the aftermarket would just prolong me from getting a wider set of wheels for more rubber and unsure if it is worth it to get a brand new aftermarket diff. Thoughts?

I'm currently running a TRD 1.5way LSD and it is awesome for autocross/drift/etc. I have had zero issues controlling the car in any situation I've put it in. Highly recommend!

I personally am curious about any options other than clutch differentials. Such as a cone or torsen differential since they don't require rebuilding and replacing parts nearly as often as the clutches. Has anyone come across any by chance?

You can't buy TRD diffs for the car anymore brand new right? I'd love to get one if I could source a new one out.

Personally, I'd stay away from a helical diff. They work well in independent rearend cars, but not so well in 4-link live axle cars, particularly ones that have been lowered considerably. A helical diff operates exactly like an open diff when you take enough weight off the inside wheel. This is far more common in autox than on road courses. On my CS MIata (99 Sport) with a Torsen in it, I get wheelspin in really tight stuff even. On my Corolla with a Tomei 2-way diff, I get wheelspin if I have any swaybar, even stock, connected when I autocross. At least, with a clutch diff, you have some forward acceleration even when you get wheelspin. You can get a Tomei T-Trax for around $700, so I really don't think you're going to do better in the price vs performance department there. I really like my diff and I'd say that it has completely transformed the car, compared to the TRD 2-way that it replaced. The car really hunkers down and turns now when I stand on it on corner exit.

for auto x i would suggest a KAAZ. for road racing or drifting i'd suggest an OS Giken or Tomei. TRD is good for all around.

Yeah but iirc it's true that 1.5 is more deal for grip. But if you like drifting 2way Is the way to go but like like how he said ^ you can still perform well with 2 way. It's more on the driver less the on the car.
