20v DLI Coil Quick Question

Postby vashachiroku » Thu Jun 25, 2015 7:14 am

Hello,

I'm putting the finishing touches on my 20v swap and I'm going to be running DLI with 1NZ plugs. The wiring is from Tweak'd Performance and everything is looking good however I'm not to sure about the coil cable. One end plugs in and the other is normally a push in on my MSD when my 16v was in the car.

What is the recommendation for most swaps? Most photos do not show where people place their Coil and Igniter, I mounted mine on the back of the engine due to wire length.

Er... those things that you have on top of the plugs are coils.

On 20V COP conversions, it has been customary to retain the factory coil
and igniter to provide a IGf signal and a wire that can be tapped for a tacho
signal. However, the factory coil is not a happy camper when the spark has
nowhere to go, and can cause a variety of problems.

So, using the wisdom I have gleaned from the interwebz, I shall give you my
recommendations :geek:

The 1NZ COP has a built-in igniter, and each COP should have four wires..

- IGt (connect all four together and to the factory IGt wire)
- IGf (connect one COP IGf to the factory IGf wire)
- 12V switched (connect all four together and to the factory coil positive wire)
- Ground (connect all four together and to ground)

If you want to run the factory AE86 tacho, you will need to tap the IGf wire
(IGt would probably work also) and use the IGF signal to drive a transistor. The
transistor will switch 12V to ground via a small relay coil, and generate the
voltage spike required by the AE86 tacho. Diagrams for this is here...

Your MSD coil, 20V coil and igniter are no longer required. Your COP's will be batch
fired by the factory ECU. No-one knows for sure why it works, it just does :D

Cut the end off the lead that's in your hand and crimp on a ring connector and ground it to the chassis to stop the coil from arcing to the chassis.
Remove your MSD coil as the 20V coil is mounted on the bulkhead.

Thanks for the replies! Yes I didn't think I needed the MSD anymore because of the 1NZ already have (4) coils now, but for the picture sake I was trying to show where it would normally go.

JDM86GTZ,
I will do this today this makes sense now that it just needs grounded!

You may want to rethink the cop, the coils will not have time to regain full charge being batch fired constantly. Also due to valve timing on a 20v you can create excess egt's by semi igniting the reversion into the cylinder. A dizzy relocation or a standalone capable of running sequential cop would be a better option.
