Toyota was busy selling MR2s for way above list price, and the MR2 production line got a lot of the equipment that would have been used for the GT-S, and stole all the publicity.

By example, in 1985 the GT-S was "on allocation" for the entire US. The NY-NJ-CT district got 12 of them to share, every month. That's 144 cars for a whole year, for three states with major car sales.

In 85 they pretty much all shipped with PS/PB. I'd have to check the window sticker to remember what the PS was bundled with, but I wanted a car without it and was told that simply was not possible.

This is my vin# JT2AE88S3F0115297....Run that through the dealership and they can verify that it was equipped with a stock manual rack. Its something rare but there are a few out there.

I have an '87 black gts coupe, no a/c, manual steering, power windows and sunroof. Almost the whole car, other than the engine and front bumper were original as they have the OEM style VIN stickers(that match my VIN) on all parts

Pretty much on anything that can be removed. fenders, hood, doors, trunk, inside of door panels, inside of the rear bumper. They are just printed stickers with a VIN on them. I will take a pic and post it.
One of the anti-theft ideas from the 80s. LOL

BY vin stickers i believe he means on the 86-87 models where they were displayed on the fenders and other parts just like on most of the newer cars.To my knowledge the vin stickers(labels) did not come on the 85 or earlier models. That is why when some ppl sell their cars they will tell u that it is a full label car, meaning all the vin stickers are in place because it was never in an accident or at least in a major one..I look for that in the newer cars because not everyone is honest when it comes to sellin a car.

I have an 84 SR5 and it runs a power rack, but then mine is a Canadian model so who knows. Manual is the **** though, AW11 rack with a T3 bushing is going to be dropped into my 86 sometime this month.

I loved my manual rack so much. After having one i never really wanted to go back to power steering but the GT-S i just bought came equipped with power steering and im not really a fan of converting anything on my cars.I was recently told the rack is leaking so here we go with the headaches again.

Most of the racks will leak. The problem is that the rubber boot at each end (side) of the rack is RUBBER and it ages. If you don't ArmorAll it, and you don't inspect it, you won't know it has cracked and let in dirt. Once there is dirt on the shaft it scores the o-ring seals AND it scores the shaft. Now you've got an expensive problem, all because those $10 rubber boots are quietly out of sight not being maintained or replaced. And they're not on the maintenance schedule, either.

Like all rubber parts, they have to be replaced maybe every 5 years. There's all kinds of "rubber" but all of it still has to be replaced from time to time.

I had one P/S failure that just left me with a lot of car to tug around, and another with a hose fire, when the P/S hose was defective, touched the manifold too often, and caught on fire. Boy was that not fun. If I could have bought my car without P/S I sure would have, but just finding a GT-S in 85 was hard enough.

Definitely swapping the boots before I install the rack, the old boots were already cracked on the AW11 rack so I yanked them before paint (Rack also had a bit of surface rust sadly).

My problem is that it was purchased leaking but i didnt think it would be as difficult to find a good reman.Im looking for a cardone one but i cant find a local autoparts that stocks em.I have to search and see if there are more or better options like repairing mine somewhere else or if the most recommendable option is ordering one up even if its a month out like i have been told.

Thanks for the boot maintenace tip Red... :)

Racks CAN be refinished to new condition. The price may be a stopper, but in any major city there are special "plasma welding" shops that resurface steel rollers for printing presses and elevator companies. They flame spray a metal plasma coating onto the roller to rebuild any worn spots, then machine it back down to perfect, round and smooth again. Way cheaper if you can find a clean used one. Way easier to buy a rebuilt one. But sometimes, it pays to have options.

The 1985 toyota corolla GT-S had a model that came equipped with a stock manual rack. Also the full power GT-S version was seen on the 86-87 models.

Swapping the whole engine would be a bit of an overkill.

if your car has a manual rack then be happy, whether it was swapped or not. manual rack is so much better than PS.

why do you think everyone pays so much money to ditch their power racks for manual setups.

"ol cause i see where a power steering pump would be but its gone."
The engines all have the same mounting points for all the same options. Unless you have an empty mounting bracket that was left behind, and leaving the bracket empty would mean whoever did it was a sloppy worker.
If you want to check your engine, there should be a stamp or plate on it with numbers that match the VIN number. Maybe not the whole VIN, but at least the production number. Engine, dash, d/s door, firewall, should all match. And carry some other numbers that tell you about original equipment as well.

In my case i prefer it because of all the leak problems that a pump or a P/S rack can cause.

By retro i mean all the old movies, old style cars,shoes,clothing,music,etc.....Old school stuff!

I love manual, but it's a bugger to get in if you don't have it. You need a midshaft from a gen 3 supra, a T3 rack bushing and a rack from an AW11 MR2, it's taken me almost a year to get all my parts together to do the swap. Midshaft just came in today though, all I need is my bushing and I'm set.
