As this car's purpose has changed somewhat, besides the bits I've already mentioned, I'll be adding a thermo-switched electric fan to keep temps under control in less then perfect racing conditions.

More to come....... :D

key part to getting the fan in, and operational is the proper parts. Below is a coolant inlet for an AE82. This will bolt in as the stock one does, and is even pointing in the correct place. The original Toyota switch is grounded, and when hot it breaks the ground(opens) and the fan comes on. This works as a safety as well, if the switch breaks, the fan stays on.

For Racecar I'm using a Honda switch, that will be open, and close @ temp (reverse of Toyota switch). This makes wiring the fan a bit simpler since the Honda switch is more conventional in operation.

BUT... the sensor doesn't quite fit. The hole for the probe is too narrow, and the threads aren't deep enough. So a few mods....

Image

and the Honda switch becomes right at home....

with just enough of the sensor in the coolant to operate, yet not so far in that it seriously disrupts flow

more to come..... :D

I'm getting ready to wire up my e-fan and would love a more simplified system. You should let me know how this works out, because I was thinking of doing the Toyota "normally closed" method initially.

So this car doesn't have traction brackets? Are they illegal in SCCA?

What is the deal with the rack? I don't see a reservoir, and didn't see a mention of it in the book. I highly doubt someone would "de-power" a rack in an official car..

not illegal in SCCA... but illegal in the ITA division - think of it as a "stock" class. The car was always a non power steering car..... there are a few other "official anomalies" in THIS car..... :o some to be revealed ;)

Wow! I've never seen a factory non-PS AE. I knew they existed but I figured they were all dead.

Thanks for shining light on ITA as well. I really want to enter either of the two, but I always worry I've modified the vehicle too much. Honestly ITA seems impossible for the (stock) 86.. But I'm sure someone is up to the challenge :)

What wheels are those? Tom's? Borbet?

I have an impossible time finding 4x114.3 5 spoke "stars". They are my favorite.

Hey oldeskewl,

I have another odd request. Is the A/C idler tension bracket still bolted on? If not, did it come with the purchase?

I have been desperately trying to find a factory manual rack AE88/86 with the tensioner bracket in place.

Racecar had her first "outing"...

a rather quiet one, she was on display @ a local Roadster show here in Portland Oregon.

To attend... a quick check noticed a fuel leak...

Not too serious, that section of EFI hose was replaced.

I am planning on a trackday for it soon, so I checked the brakes, and found a bent pad, and a warped rotor, so I've ordered all new brakes (Porterfield R4 - front, and R4S for the rears), new rotors, and new pad hardware.

Waiting for her new brakes....

soon - Was hoping to make May 17th, but expect pads too late. All plans are now for Track Night @ Portland (PIR) on June 7th!!!

Being R6s, these are a bit old.....

Image

The date code on the old Hoosier R6's was 2009 - 10 years old!

So new tires for Racecar: Nitto NT01 205/55/14 - she'll need them for My track day
