AE86 Project Coupe!

Postby jhtoy85 » Wed Aug 13, 2014 1:45 pm

Im pretty late in the game when it comes to posting my project, so lets get right into it.
I bought a 1985 Ae86 Toyota Coupe on a crags list ad in 2011.

From the start i saw the car had no rust, what so ever which is a good thing. Had very minor dents on the body.
The interior had all the panels and nothing missing from the cars features. Most interior was in rough condition.
The previous owner did the 4age 16v swap from a 4ac that this car normally had.

The engine had severe leaks all over. So i first began removing the engine and rebuild it from the ground up.
I bought a rebuild kit on ebay, no specific one. Just found 2 problems.
The oil filter bracket had no o ring which was part of the problem of the major leakage.
Also the distributor housing seal was missing and the shafts seal was very brittle passing oil the rotor.
I manage to find both small kits at kbox engineering site and purchased.

Both seals are a perfect fit, so i recommend those if needed in your project. Also they don't make the copper o rings on the bracket seal no more
so thats sad.

I also recommend using Toyota's engine sealant oil pan, oil pump, rear main seal engine cover. It cures quickly and the best out of any sealant out there.
Went to my nearest Toyota dealer and got me a couple of tubes.

Meanwhile my gf is gutting the interior, taking out the seats, carpet, headliner, and dash.

Ending result.

We gave a good wash to the engine bay which will get painted pretty soon. Thinking about a gunmetal grey for the bay.
Here it is after the clean.

Ill keep you guys posted of whats up coming.

*UPDATE*

Finally we got to get on the 86! Yay!
I was beginning to finish assemble the engine until I noticed I was missing something!
This would explain when i bought the car, gasoline smell!

Image

No injector insulators! So i postponed the engine and had to find and order them online.
Found them on toyotapartsdirect.com so they should be on the way.
Here's the part number if you need those insulators. 23291-41010

Saw my gf finished removal the harness and interior accessories.

Image

Then I saw what i didn't want to see. RUST, under the pedals! So i quickly too action lol!

Image

Also.. the trunk area :(

Just did a simple grind to remove some of the worst parts. Still needs some preping and rust removed :)

The interior is going to be rhino lined. What I'm trying to achieve with the rhino is 1, engine and road noise will be greatly reduced. 2, temperature in the cabin and engine will not transfer as bad (firewall).
And 3, will keep temperature trapped in cabin when A/C is on :). Also need to patch some frame holes that brings moisture inside. REALLY bad when is rains and the inside fog kills you lol!! The rhino line will also
protect it from rusting up further. Before that we need to cure the rust before rhino lining :)
