OST-036: Frankie - The Flogger from beyond the Grave

About 6 months ago (May 2015) te72guy came by and helped me clear out some scrap taking most of the old bad heads, and about a dozen old cams.

One head I hung on to was this.....

I'm not sure why I held on to it.... but I did.

About 3 months prior to te72guy picking up scrap, I had contacted Supertech, and SI Valve to get a set (4 - 2 intake, 2 exhaust) from each so I could do the test on the valves in a stock port/chamber, and a ported port/chamber. This head was used for these tests.

The valve test thread is out there....

So back to the present, once it got cleaned for use in the valve test, some damage was found in the #3 intake side squish pad. So besides the valve test I used this head to "experiment" on, and installed an external intake side oil drain, similar to the drain found in smallport heads.

This drain should minimize, or eliminate the large volume of oil blowby often caused by sustained left hand drifts/curves/turns, when used in an FR layout. The drain will also help to minimize oil starvation during these maneuvers do to the oil no longer packing into the head. I do have a plug if the purchaser is using this in a transverse layout.

The damage will get machined away with a moderately deep(1mm/.040") as the target chamber for this head is 33.5cc.

OST's valves thread wrote:Ported head w/ stock valves WITH back cut
..........Lift - Exhaust
.050" - 27.53
.100" - 59.83
.150" - 92.16
.200" - 115.31
.250" - 124.52
.300" - 128.77
.350" - 131.11

So in the photo below, the top view is a typical OST ported head, but Frankie has a bit more.....

Image

Frankies exhaust ports have been changed. There are a few changes, 1) the roof of the exhaust port now carries a gradual taper, in a stock port, and even my typical ported ports, the port roof is flat, 2) The inside of the port has been changed (following Blacktop example) and there is no longer a roof splitter with a gradual end, the end is now abrupt and well inside the port. 3) Finally, the port walls have been opened up a bit more to bypass the guide and valve stem.

And the results.........
.050" - 27.73
.100" - 60.14
.150" - 93.34
.200" - 119.77
.250" - 131.71
.300" - 136.94
.350" - 141.04
So Frankie's exhaust ports can now flow an added 10 cfm...... @ 9mm of lift
