Postby futurehachi » Wed Jan 08, 2014 7:05 pm

Hi guys!
I was wondering what your solutions were for daily driving a car with itb's. how did you cope with the lack of an air filter?
I plan to daily my car but I cant quite figure out what the best way to solve the lack of an air filter.

Here's what I would like from you guys:
-Name your solution
-Details of how you did it
-List of materials used
-Approximate budget
-and last but not least, PICTURES!!

thanks guys!

This forum seems to be particularly bad about thinking running ITBs is synonymous with running open stacks. Many cars and far more motorcycles successfully run ITBs but they all run filters. So the short answer. Put filters on it. If that's not an option then just plan on rebuilding your motor more often.

As for filters here is one option.

If you don't want to make the backplate let me know and I can get one cut for you.

Here is another one but there aren't pics of them mounted. You would need the right stack to be able to use this method.

beyond that there are always stock boxes. Whatever ITBS you have came with some sort of air filter on it originally.

If you are on a budget just go to a motorcycle or ATV shop, grab some UNI filter sheets, cut out your own filters and zip tie them on. http://www.unifilter.com/accessories/

I got these socks from T3. They work great.
The word ITB's and Budget don't belong in the same topic, lol.

Silvertop i ran open and fried piston rings within 20,000km.
Blacktop had it for 30,000 km with uni socks pictured above, still comp. tests the same. Although even the sock filters really impede the noise. I think the safest way is to build a custom plenum as large as possible with a conventional cone filter.

Rs yasu and noby booth make bolt on plenums. Just add your own intake/filter.

Carbs, ITB's all the same. Screens will keep out rocks and rodents, but
the small dust is the stuff that wrecks your engine, and that goes thru
a screen like it wasn't there !!!

I used a big Ram Air filter and plate off eBay. Pretty sure it was for a BMW 2002 you have to measure the distance from intake #2 to #3 to find what plate you need. The clips were installed facing the wrong way so I pressed them out, IN welded some threaded studs in the filter, and used 3 wing nuts to attach to the plate. For ITBs you would want a blank platw and drilling the holes out where you need them unless you can find a plate specific for your car.

jondee86 said it pretty well but I will second it just to stress the point.
All motors come from the factory with air filters including ITBs and carbs. It is definitely no less important for either. If it wasn't important OEMs wouldn't waste the time and money fitting every single vehicle with one.

Just look at the picture i posted above of my old engine bay. I opened the hood and there are some leaves laying on the filter. No filter means that trash could easily get sucked into the motor. I worked way too hard on that damn trashcan to have it suck up crap and die so easy.

sidekickChuck - I have been emailing with Ramair through ebay and am close to ordering my filters like you have in the picture. would you be able to give me the model number of the filters that you ordered? what size stacks do you have also? thanks!

I am currently running open 3.5 inch stacks and love them so far, but I want to have the option of throwing a filter on any time I want and may end up running the filter almost always.

I ordered these:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/271183801819?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT

I took their dimensions and they seemed to match well against my ITBs. I dont know the spcs of my trumpets, but since they give a description of the hole sizes and space between the holes, you can determine which one of their filters will work for your application.
