Converting my Ae82 to become an AE86

Postby 86HachiRokuGTS » Sat Dec 20, 2014 10:04 am

I was wondering if I should try this converting my AE82 to becoming an AE86 or would it just be better to buy an AE86

Read over what you said again and I bet you can answer this question yourself.

If you want an AE86, specifically a GT-S. Find the specific car you want and buy it, do not convert. Finding the right parts and converting everything over is a huge amount of work and frustration.

Also in the end you run the risk of having a half-baked, partially working "swap" that honestly is worse than the car you started with.

This is just my opinion from reading through other's projects, and from my own project. Although, in all cases buying the car you wanted to begin with is always easier. :P

Converting an AE82 (FWD) to an AE86 (RWD) would be a lot of work !!!
Putting a 4AGE into a 4AC powered AE82 would be much easier :)

I think it is this brother that has a 4age silvertop in his Opel Corsa in FR layout
Although it doesn't sound right so it might be a Vauxhall C20XE

It may be easier to transplant the 4age to the rear and make it an MR, at least that way you don't have to mess with the front suspension and or weld in a front crossmember for the FR setup. The FWD mac struts would not work to well with the FR setup. With making it MR you know you can use the majority of the parts from the aw11 or sw20. It would essentially be less work overall than the FR setup.

No idea about ae82 parts but to there's a few very nice examples of the AE86 for sale on here in the classifieds, or scour craigslist every waking moment, as soon as one gets posted contact the seller as soon as you can. Unless your lucky you will most likely have to travel some distance to find one but it all depends what your willing to start with and what your budget is. It took me 6 years to find my 86 which I bought immediately because it had no rust and a straight frame and body which were my requirements.

If your looking for an engine swap you can do a silvertop 20v or blacktop 20v in the ae82 chassis without modifying anything except the wiring. If your asking to turn the ae82 to RWD, as I mentioned before it may be easier to do a mid engine setup. It also would probably be better to even do an AWD setup, but IF you had the ability to do this you probably wouldn't be posting and asking about it. I'm getting the feeling that you might have confused that the silvertop or blacktop came original on the ae86. If not maybe you mean putting the ae86 Levin face on the ae82, I think I've seen this done somewhere also.

As for modifying the ae82, any A series engine will fit it, and along with those engines any mods that people has done on them regardless of platform can be done. As far as the chassis goes I think ultra racing might have a few braces and any cage for the ae82 will have to be custom, Whiteline racing made some good bushings, swaybars and misc suspension parts. I don't know if they still do, but SuperPro made poly bushings for the ae82 also. For the suspension aside from the Ground Control/Koni setup MRP made some coilovers and there's some others floating around.

If you don't mind a little welding you might also want to consider the 3sge, 3sgte, 2zzge or v6 family engines, even a 4efte might do pretty well in the ae82 chassis.

Better to just get an AE86. Unless you want to do the AWD thing and transplant a Celica All Trac powertrain into it. To go RWD you basically have to transplant an AE86 rear pan into the AE82. Unless you go with a tube subframe. Another option is to graft in an AW11 rear into the back of the AE82 and keep the FWD as well! Set the thing up with drive by wire capable management and go nuts!
One shot, one kill.

Have fab skills, and be resourceful simple as that. In all seriousness though you really can't convert one car to be another, but you can convert its drivetrain layout.

Its as I said it, Have fab skills, but you can't make a ae82 an ae86 cuz its different chassis DUH, you can make an ae82 RWD yea. Thats where the fab skills come in, it isn't a bolt in affair to make a FWD car RWD lol.

He didnt ask how to make it rwd. He asked how to make it into an ae86. All the fab skills in the world wont accomplish that, because it is impossible. Thats like saying if you have gardening skills you can turn a tomato into a turnip.

86HachiRokuGTS,

I think you have everyone confused on this thread. There is no such thing as AE82, if you have a 1982 corolla, they the correct chassis code for it would be TE72, and if you do have one of those then you can convert the entire running gear/suspension, and engine and tranny to GTS. But if you have corolla that is from 1988-91 then the chassis code on that is the AE92, and that comes with a FWD 4age, and like alot of these guys said, would be a waste of time and money to convert it to RWD.

The fx16 is an ae82 chassis code as well as the fwd corolla sold along side the rwd gts of that time. And the te72 is rwd so no need to convert that
