Suffering from the itsuki complex
Suffering from the itsuki complex
Hello everyone. So i never imagined myself to end up with an 86. I had a 94 miata supercharged running on rs watanabe with hardtop so the thought of owning an 86 never crossed my mind. One day my friend brought a clean one for 600 bucks previous owner says it was overheating after about half an hour. He came up there looked at it added tranny fluid and drove it home. To this day it still works great and has been ranting and raving about how awesome it is. So me buying into all the awesomeness i been hearing decided to pick one up. I managed to find one needed a lot of work but was finally happy that i found one within my budget. Excited that i finally got an 86 to rock with my buddy until we popped the hood. My friend quickly noticed the sticker on the side of the block that says "3a-scv" so there i was beet red as all my buddy was laughing and pointing out that i got an ae85 not an ae86. At work i had a Japanese customer that wanted to look at my car and when he saw that same engine he too started to laugh at how i ended up with an ae85 here in the states when its not even available. Even though i later realized the car is an 86 and motor was just dropped i never got over the teasing and now suffer from the itsuki complex. I just thought id say greet everyone and share my unfortunate condition lol. Other then that the car has been a real blast to drive it. Hopefully one day i can swap a better motor and maybe then get the last laugh >=)

Re: Suffering from the itsuki complex
Hey no worries bro, fix up your ride and be proud of it, and some day, maybe, swap in a 4ag.
Re: Suffering from the itsuki complex
how do you not know what you are buying before you buy it?
Re: Suffering from the itsuki complex
Had to google itsuki complex. I'm not really into the whole initial d stuff.
From what i can see it doesn't look to bad. But didn't you pop the hood before you bought it? That's usually the first thing i do.

Nice! Take care of it, it'll take care of you, whilst draining your wallet all at the same time.
This is the place to post your questions for this car, and you will have a ton. Trust us.

Re: Suffering from the itsuki complex
Thanks for the welcoming. I look forward to this project. Im actually having more fun with this car then i did with my miata. And as for looking under the hood. I really didnt pay attention to the 3a sticker. It looked exactly like a 4a to me and it was about 1k for clean title running car that drove 150 miles home before all the problem came up. I fixed it enough to run now but still is a work in progress and im happy.

Re: Suffering from the itsuki complex
I was looking for a replacement a few years back and called a few used motor places (the ones that import the old engines from japan). They usually only had 3ACs if they did have any. I've seen quite a few in the junk yard with them too.

Didn't tercel's/starlets come with 3a engines? i know one gen of them came with a 3a in america, but how he got a 3a SVC is beyond me. Mabye it was in some cali tercel/starlets and someone needed an engine to be emissions compliant.
Then again he has a breather on top so that definatly isnt emissions compliant.
I have no idea
Re: Suffering from the itsuki complex
Is there anything special about the 3a-SCV? I know that SCV stands for swirl control valve but what exactly is it? And is it a rare motor or something? Also it did pass smog with US emission stuff on it. I just took it off until next smog.

Either way, you got a running car that is relatively inexpensive to just wrench on and learn. So more power to you!

Re: Suffering from the itsuki complex
So I figured I resurrect my old thread and update everyone with another one of life's irony. I recently brought another ae86 hatchback from a good customer of mines where I work. He is an older gentleman and although he knew the value of the car he still ended up selling it to me for 1k. He owned the car since 93 so it was never tracked and abuse all through out the initial D era. Very clean for its age no rust at all on the hatch or body. Now here is the irony, I brought this car thinking YAY I'm finally getting a 4a-c a proper 86. But no customer then told me after I brought the car that he had replaced the motor at 250k with a low mileage japanese motor. The motor in car now is a 3a-scv, although this one has no sticker to indicate it. Im still grateful to have a running clean title 86 that has a healthy motor and is in great condition so no biggie for me. I just thought it was funny that I don't think I'll ever be cured of my complex haha. Either way I just couldn't pass up this hatchback for 1k. What do you all think?
*edit* Oh yea forgot to mention I think this hatch was the lowest trim model. It has no power steering, no air conditioning, manual windows, but at least it has power mirrors on a 1 piece smaller side mirrors. If anyone can tell me what they are that would be great. I don't know if my side mirrors are aftermarket, or maybe kouki or zenki or maybe it could be jdm.

Yea I'm actually planning to sell the coupe once I transfer all my parts over to the hatch. Keep in contact with me and I'll let you know when I'm done and when I am ready to sell the coupe.
Here is some interior shots of the hatch
And here is a rare shot of my mother's FRS with the two ae86. Not everyday someone is able to have this kind of shot =)
