How to Refinish Window Moldings

Postby truenoboy » Mon Mar 09, 2015 8:02 pm

Do you guys have any tips or tricks on how to refinish window molding? I hoping to remove the black on mine to repaint them.

I used a razor blade to get rid of the rubber material. For what I couldn't get off, I'd heat it up with a small torch, and then went back at it with a razor.

Use caution, it get's hot.

Don't use plastidip unless you just want it to peel off

I was going to try heat shrink tubing, the thick stuff or in combination with the thin.

Being a glass guy I've answered this question on more then one occasion. Once I got some vinyl from my local sign shop our clients reviews went through the roof. All different thicknesses and finishes to meet your needs. As most older mouldings are metal heat gun/torch works great to delaminate the old. Methyl hydrate always on hand since is used to cut lami glass. Acetone etc etc sure will work. Then a simple process to cut strips needed and apply. Use something soft that's non abrasive to hone to perfection. Viola! Brand-new results. Can color match if wanted desired effect and so on. Hope this helps

That's a great idea. A search reveled this video (sorry I don't know how to embed): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-GWmfDnDhs

I wonder how it would hold up.

The only concern with this application is the olfa knife and it razor blade. As ll chrome mouldings have a clear wrap to it. Or body side of the trim most have rubber to contact the body. Be worried of a hack job. As mentioned being a glass guy trained not to nick or scratch the pinchweld for obvious reasons. I'm as anal as they come, diy for sure lol. Definitely will be refurbishing my window trim all around, belt mouldings etc. As I have no peel on my ae will over wrap .... one day lol
Great vid/resource. Embedding worked too![emoji106]
Lastly, so many gauges and quality of vinyls, you get what you pay for and like anything it's all in the prep.
