AE86 Carbon Fiber Drive Shafts (4 models now available)

AE86 one piece carbon fiber drive shafts for sale exclusively made for me by PST.

Lighter then steel or aluminum, three times the torsional strength of the OEM steel shafts, torsional spring rate of carbon fiber allows for better tire hook up due to the different pinion angle of a one piece shaft resulting in more traction, smoother drivetrain feel and shifting while providing less shock on your diff resulting in less tranny and diff breakage. These shafts have been balanced to 180mph and have zero high speed vibration. Road/Track enthusiasts as well as Drifters the benefits are better control out of corners and more power to the rear wheels which has been proven at the Tsukuba Circuit in Japan recently (02/05/2016) when a specially made carbon aluminum shaft along with the new EWP performance water pump kit was installed on Mr Hiroaki Oda's CBY N2 Trueno resulting in a .8 reduction in lap time and a new personal record of 58.8 down from 59.6 seconds.

Stock shaft weighs 22lbs and are 2 pieces design. By now with our cars turning 30-33 years old your u-joints have a ton of play or are toasted from years of abuse. Time has pretty much past to upgrade and unlock some proven Hp to the wheels.

Some info that drive shaft makers and sellers dont tell you is all drive shafts are not created equal and have have a max critical speed in which they can operate before becoming unstable, flexing, twisting or breaking. In the order from worse to best material to use for one piece shafts when it comes to AE86 applications or any one piece application that has a length more than 40"; steel, chrome moly, aluminum and finally carbon fiber. The AE86 uses a shaft roughly 49-50 inches long and 2.25" in diameter from factory in a 2 piece setup. Since each piece is roughly 20" long it can sustain pretty high rpms before vibration but is heavy...... the same shaft specs in a one piece steel design would have max critical rotation speed of 6900-7000 rpm before vibration, flex and and failure. Heres a customer who decided to purchase a metal one piece shaft for $350 which ultimately ended up breaking, sipping his fuel and brake lines out and slicing his exhaust in half. Don't let this happen to you by purchasing low priced metal one piece shafts.

The bigger the diameter of the shaft is the higher the max critical speed will be, for example a 4" diameter shaft at the same AE86 driveshaft length mentioned earlier can handle about 9000 rpm before it becomes unstable. Problem with that is you only have so much space under the car for the shaft to operate in and 4" will not fit. Chrome Moly's critical speed maximum is about the same as steel while aluminum provides 1000 higher rpm potential than the others. Downfall with aluminum is over time the constant heating and cooling of aluminum starts to deteriorate its strength and the shaft can fail unexpectedly. Another issue with metal shafts is damage from road stones, pot holes, speed bumps eat eat, which can throw the shaft out of balance or jeopardize its strength. Carbon fiber at 2.75" diameter, 50" long has a critical speed is 13000 rpm before it becomes unstable. Another benefit of carbon fiber is it does not transfer vibration from your rear to your transmission or vice versa like metal shafts do because the organic fiber material actually absorbs it reducing the vibration you feel in the shifter which creates makes shifting not as smooth. Carbon is also flexible and strong enough to absorb the impact of stones, potholes and other road hazards a lot better then metal shafts. With over 50 shafts sold world wide since 2005 you won't find prices for high quality carbon fiber drive shafts that have been tested and proven anywhere else. Does the pinion flange need to be re-drilled to bolt it in?

I grabbed one second hand over a year ago from another member and I had to re-drill the flange to fit it. I'm think it's from one of your previous group buys, but I'm not sure.

If the transmission is a t50 on the sr5 it will work and Deuce Cam no a straight bolt on u joint is made to fit now..previous style i used to provide re-drilled pinion plates....are u using one now...can u give any feedback on drivability, feel, overall performance over stock?

Its about 2 weeks to make now due to the machining of the ujoint rather then redrilling the pinion plate but it saves u time from taking your pinion plate out and redrilling it...

No price change...also i want to mention to use a 1 piece drive shaft u need adjustable 4 links to properly adjust pinion angle... I forgot to mention that in the initial post.. To two piece shaft is made to accommodate the fixed rear end position but when u lower or raise the car the pinion angle becomes incorrect and will cause vibration to any driveshaft you use...

ok so how does it work? most guy will lower their car. but if lower the ride height make the pinion angle incorrect.. then how would u correct that problem? i guessing adjusting the lateral bar? to center the rear end.. but that just to move it left to right..
are you talking about angling the pinion up and down? if so HOW?

4 links adjust up and down angle of the rear, lateral rod side by side...people who lower their cars without adjustable 4 links or lateral rods just deal with the vibration or offset rear end...most probably dont notice.....with a 2 piece shaft the u joints can accommodate the change to a certian extent because it has 4 joints...on a one piece shaft it cant compensate and needs to remain in the 1-3 degree angle rule....

u are right about that pinion angle.. i alway wonder why after install T3 5 link and lower my car. i hear a pretty loud rotating noise from drive shaft on 5th gear... today after i jack up the car when under it and adjust that angle more straight.. now the noise is reduced big time.. was 10/10 now 2/10... thank you so much.. :)

No problem make sure the angle of the joints are the same on the tranny side and rear end side should be 1-3 degrees down on the tranny side and same on rear side better if the number is the same on both.

when are you going to have ones for beams J160 ready? and how can you know they will fit everyone's setup since everyone does custom mounts?

i'm interested since I need a custom unit for my beams swap.

Well im in the process of finishing up the design for one using my J160 LEEN tranny conversion but your right unless there is a standard mounting setup like JSP is making that everyone uses i cant make one that will fit everyones setups the will have to be custom made...i would need the measurements from the end of the output shaft to the pinion plate on the rear also the measurement from the seal on the tranny to the pinion plate on the rear once u have everything bolted up...same goes with the s2000 setups

what would lead time be on a custom one?

just asking because once everythign is bolted up i'm not going to want to wait around for weeks waiting for a driveshaft, at that point i'd just bring it to a local shop and have one made then and there.

Once i order them lead times about 2 weeks..few days to order slip yoke, machine the rear joint and make/balance the shaft then shipping time

I have one of these from the first group buy, been driving it daily driver, street, highway and at the track. love this drive shaft. you will notice the difference in all rpm range.

Awesome Socal glad theres someone still on the forum with one....anymore feedback would be great for potential buyers...shifting smoothness, acceleration, vibration if any, performance in the track...difference betwen the carbon and stock...ive given feedback but im sure people would rather hear from others then me the seller.
