AE86 Squeaking

Postby Swooki » Tue Jun 27, 2017 12:03 am

Hello I noticed today that my car would squeak when i rev in neutral??? could it be because the belt is too loose and losing grip or what could it be? It would barely squeak when i take off only when i rev match. So pretty much rev in neutral. The higher I rev the louder it is.
If it is the belt do i just tighten it or how tight do i do it?

Alternator belt usually just squeaks for a short time immediately after the
engine starts, and then stops. If you have squeaking from the front and it
starts randomly at different times, it could be the water pump. You can check
by taking the belt off and running the engine for 20 seconds.

If the squeaking stops, you are on the right track. But don't run the engine
for too long without the belt on, as there will be no circulation in the cooling
system.

Before you take the belt off, tighten it some and see if the squeak goes away
or only happens just after starting. That will be a loose belt and you will save
yourself a bit of time by not having to check the water pump :)

The belt could also just be worn out. Be sure to inspect the belt.
