If i recall correctly the O ring one goes around the thermostat and the other gasket sits between the thermostat housing and the waterpump. Try them both and see if it fits but it seems correct to me to use both.

What I found was that there seem to be two types of housing. One has a shallow
(around 1mm) recess to hold the thermo, and that type uses the paper gasket. I think
that this is the type most common on older RWD Corollas. The other type has a deeper
recess (around 3mm) and this one is sized to use the rubber "O-ring" type gasket
wrapped around the outside edge of the thermo. You don't use the paper gasket as the
rubber ring provides the sealing.

You should be able to figure it out by looking at the recess in the housing.

AE86 uses the paper gasket and AE92 uses the O-Ring

These guys said to only use paper gasket.. hmm... because when i went to toyota and they showed me the diagram it didnt show any O rings. *confused* :?:
