Mildy tuned 4a-ge bigport MPG

Postby mr2mk1hero » Thu Jan 26, 2017 7:17 am

So I did a little road trip recently and made a video out of it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqu9_Ae2Cm8

The video is long, but what will probably be most interesting to this forum is that I used the opportunity to calculate the MPG of my mildly modded 4AGE:

Here's what I have on the engine:
Cams: Catcams 8.0 lift, 244 duration
Smallport pistons and 10.4 compression
Cam pulleys: techno toy tuning
Valve springs: HKS
Flywheel: oem blacktop
Clutch: Aisin
All new gaskets: OEM
All new oem conrod and crank bearings
Entire rotating assembly balanced
Oil: 10w 40
Engine has done 700 km so far
Timing set to to 10 btdc

The driving was mixed, mostly open road, 20% of city driving, a bit of idling, driving was mildly spirited, nothing too aggressive.
My fuel consumption was: 7.76 liters per 100km which equals to 36.6 MPG.

So what do you guys think? Good, bad, average? I was actually pleased with it. Considering its old engine tech and how fun the engine is its pretty nice. My 2007 1.6 16v suzuki does around 6l on the open road.

That sounds decent. Especially with spirited driving!
I did a build for economy, 4AGE awhile back. My final combination was 10.7 comp(our mid grade fuel, 89) with the intake cam being a WEB camshaft grind 294, 8.2mm lift and 246* ad/220 @ .050" with an early 4AGE OEM cam on the exhaust. Actually did better with this cam combo than any other I tried. General smoothing in the ports just above the valves and polishing the combustion chambers. I used the 40mm crank and rods with a 7lb(3.2Kg) flywheel. Drove like a grandma and netted 47mpg highway. The car was an FX16 and it was only used for commuting, 99% of that was highway. Made a huge difference when gas was between $5-6 per gallon and the commute one way was 117 miles. consider my pick up at 50 bucks a day as opposed to the FX 50 bucks every other day.
One shot, one kill.

Wow, 47 mpg is amazing! That's like a modern 4 pot turbo diesel. Its amazing what you can do with a 4age if you want to, and put some thought into it.

I asked about building up a 4A-GTE for gas mileage a while ago:

Took many days of minor adjustments here and there and driving like you WANTED to save gas. Any idea how hard it is to get passed by EVERYBODY? It was a good practice in self control. Lots of discipline. I don't think I'll ever bother again, at least not until I can only get 5 gallons of fuel a month.
