AE82 MANUAL TRANSMISSION

Postby oldae82 » Sat Jun 11, 2016 4:54 pm

I'm pulling an engine from what appears to be an '88 ae82 4age. I went to pull the axle shafts, but they're not like my '87- they're not held to the output shafts by 6 bolts. they appear to locked inside the transfer case by keepers, and I don't know how to get to them. My shop manual for the '87 shows only the 6-bolt set up for both the c51 and c52. I have such a 6-bolt transmission with only about 80K on it, which I'd love to use, but I'm in uncharted waters here. Will it mate up to the '88 4age I'm pulling, and how do I get the axle shafts out of the '88?

I tried looking (searching) in the archives, but my current password won't let me into them, and I've forgotten my old one.

You have to pull the hubs first. Pop the lower ball joint to get the most travel, or remove the two bolts that hold the strut to the knuckle. push the axle out of the hub and then use a prybar to pop the axles from the tranny.
One shot, one kill.

Excellent. Thank you. Are the transmissions, aside from the axle shafts, interchangeable?

I think the seals are different. Splines are the same.
