20v swap, alternator bracket question

Postby alavelle12 » Wed Jul 31, 2013 5:54 pm

Ok, so I am swapping a bt 20v into my sr5 ae86 and I am wondering whether or not I can use the stock 20v alternator brackets or if I need to get the 16v rwd brackets? On one write-up, it says you do, while another write-up i'm using doesn't mention it. Along with this, is there a special alternator belt I will need, or do I just get the stock 20v one?
Thanks,
Alec

Ok if you use the 16v one u have to swap the waterpump and oil pump as it will hit the hydraulic tensioner if you want to use the 20v one u have to cut the rear bolt hole off the bracket or shave it half its thickness to fit over the engine mount bracket because they share the same bolt..i took a grinder and shaved it thinner until the other bolt mounts fit flush against the block...it will be about 1/4 thick if done correctly

I am running the 20v waterpump, but i did the 16v oil pump/timing tensioning conversion. So in reality, I could do either setup?

You should be able to use the 16v bracket then but i believe u have to use the 16v alternator and crank pully so everything lines up..if u use the 20v bracket u need 20v crank pulley and water pump

I'm running all OEM 20v accessories. I modified the alternator bracket (cut so my SQ Engineering water pipe could fit) then I shaved the inner diameter of the bracket since I shimmed the rear wheel drive motor mounts so everything would be straight. so far so could, just ordered my 20v belt should be here in a week for test-fit, should work well. Will post a picture here if you need it or PM me.

you can use the 16v alternator, bracket assembly on the BT 20v. You have to notch the front of the mount to clear the hydro tensioner. I did this when i went to a 16/20(16v head on 20v BT block) I have since switched to the 16v oil pump and tensioner setup.
