steering noise

Postby oldae82 » Thu Aug 16, 2018 7:45 pm

I have an '87 fx16 (ae82). I have an annoying sound/feel in the steering. It's not apparent when first starting out, but after about 30 minutes of driving I can feel a "tick tick" in the steering wheel and hear a rattle. The noise/feeling does not seem to be related to suspension travel or wheel position. I checked the sway bar mounts, I checked the ball joints and tie rod ends. I had somebody else check the ball joints and tie rod ends (Just a little paranoid). I pulled the steering column and checked both the u-joints. After I've driven the car long enough to hear and feel the noise, I can stop the car, turn off the engine and when I rock the steering wheel I can hear and feel it rattle most distinctly. I can hear the rattle inside the cab of the car. Is there anything left but the steering rack?

Manual rack ?
Not that it matters much, pre-load on the rack bar is adjustable and the bearing in the end of the rack is replaceable.
Have someone 'wiggle' the steering wheel while you listen out for the noise.

Was steering rack, having eliminated everything else first. No more click-kick
